Sometimes the whole conversation about eating natural foods can get strident and scary. From "Fast Food Nation" to "Food Inc.," there are loads of people ready and willing to terrify you into putting down the french fries.
The other day this video for Honest Foods bars turned up in my email. It's charming, and light-hearted, and gets the message across about choosing natural, wholesome foods.
What a concept! A happy natural food ad! In addition to making me hungry, and want to go out dancing, the Honest Foods video got me thinking about how rare it is to have fun singing and dancing in commercials for wholesome things.
How clean and green is your bathroom? It's easy to rely on toxic, chemical-laden cleaners to make sure we get rid of all the icky germs in the bathroom, but those chemicals aren't good for you orthe environment. Add to that the amount of water that gets wasted and all the crazy ingredients in your shampoo, and this little room starts to have a big impact.
From choosing the right light bulbs and showerhead to using the right cleaning products, the video above has tips for making your bathroom as eco-friendly as possible.
Got some tips of your own? Share them in the comments!
In the video, the two animals accost a woman carrying an alligator bag, and her boyfriend who is holding her rabbit fur coat. The four of them argue while the alligator smears blood across the floor, and the (freaking scary) bunny jumps up and attacks the dude.
It's a distracting video, that's for sure. And who knew Ricky Gervais was so vehemently anti-fur? But will it change anyone's mind (and yes, we're looking at you, Giorgio Armani)? Probably not, because they'll never watch a video of skinned, bleeding, talking animals.
Still, it gives the rest of us something to talk about on a Friday afternoon at work. Watch at your own peril, and definitely not during lunch.
With the amount of everything but the kitchen sink that legendary rockers Kiss put into the atmosphere, it's slightly ironic that they would be be involved in a PSA for the environment. Man, that Kiss -- always keeping the fans guessing.
The above video, all nine seconds of it, is part of a campaign by Planet Green called "Pass it On" in which people you may or may not have heard of share a tidbit with us, the masses, on what we can do to help the environment during the course of our daily non-celebrity lives.
Not all of Kiss is in the video. The ad features the Spaceman Ace Frehley Tommy Thayer and some words of wisdom that aren't, but should be "rock and roll all night and recycle every day." Seriously, if Kiss uses that I'll be rich (and then I'll be making videos for you, the masses).
Ours is a culture of celebrity so it's nice to see them getting involved, even for 9 seconds at a time. Thank you! Goodnight!
Chimps are incredibly clever. And cute. And funny.
Check out this video from Save the Chimps, showing baby chimp Mel finagling a ride from her adopted mother, Alice. Even the most crusty curmudgeon out there is going to smile. It's irresistible!
Save the Chimps is an organization that does exactly what it says -- they save chimps, rescuing them from research facilities and the very bad exotic pet trade, as well as taking them in when they get too old for entertainment jobs.
The group provides a life long home to literally hundreds of chimps, and is in the process of moving them from a former research lab in New Mexico to a state-of-the-art facility in Florida. If you have a soft spot for chimp faces, hide your wallet before you read the story of the Great Chimp Migration.
I was starting to wonder when Neil Young would release a electric car manifesto in the form of an ill-conceived album filled with dull, preachy tunes. Well, apparently it's in the works. As much time as Neil's been spending under the hood of his classic LincVolt EV, he's apparently decided to write and record a "concept album about eco-friendly cars." Please God, let it be better than that horrible Corey Feldman album.
According to Pitchfork, the album will be titled Fork in the Road (a pretty decent title, no?), and features such instant classics as Fuel Line, Cough up the bucks, Hit the Road, and Get Around. I know some of you will want to stick up for old Neil or any other artist who makes an effort to raise awareness for a good cause like climate change. Trust me, I'd like to be able to do the same -- I really would. I love Neil Young. But would you feel the same way if this were an album about sound banking practices? Sometimes, when it's bad ... it's just bad.
Mickey Rourke is a big tough guy, but he's also a big mush when it comes to his chihuahuas, Loki and Jaws. Lucky mutt Loki has accompanied Mickey all over the world, including the red carpet at the premiere of The Wrestler at the Venice Film Festival last September.
Mickey is also a PETA supporter, and the star of the latest ad for ABC -- Animal Birth Control -- the campaign to get people to spay and neuter their pets.
This newest ad features gritty, black and white photography of Mickey holding Jaws, and the vivid sentiment: "Have the cojones to fix your dog."
You have to watch the video of Mickey with his two dogs, talking about bad puppy stores, rescuing Jaws, and taking the time to build a relationship with your dog. It's even better than anything you're imagining right now...beware the f-bomb he drops near the end.
Timberland has a pretty funny ad (above) for their new line of shoe called Earthkeepers. Obviously the Earth is a fan, but what, exactly, is it that makes the shoes environmentally sound?
According to Timberland: "Earthkeepers is a line of premium Timberland footwear and apparel product that reflects our commitment to "Make it better." Beginning in 2008 Timberland product with the Earthkeepers label must meet design criteria around recycled, organic and renewable material content, solvent-free adhesives and reduced climate impact."
I live in Texas so the weather changes about every 5 minutes it seems - if you live somewhere that is consistently cold this time of year you may be feeling concerned about your heating or electric bill. The coldest months of the year come right on the heels of Christmas spending so it's important to do whatever you can to reduce that bill.
Reducing your heating bill helps you out, but it also means you're using less of whatever it is that heats your house whether that is electric, gas or something else. Using less is good for the planet. If you need more ideas about reducing your heating bill, the Ask Umbra feature over at Grist has an amusing new video.
It doesn't have any radical new ideas, wear layers, make sure you're not letting cold air in or warm air out, and turn down the temp but, it's still fun to watch. Go ahead, just like your Mom always said, make sure you put on a sweater!
At least they didn't kick her while she was really down. Instead, PETA is kicking Britney Spears while she's still on the very fragile paparazzi-paved road to recovery.
In a letter that is seriously reaching, the publicity hungry organization accuses the pop princess of taking the low road and using animals in her circus video. Yes, that's right -- they are angry about the use of elephants.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video of two prominent electric cars drag racing has got to be worth... at least a few billion? Street value? Just a guess. Not to mention, there's really no other adequate way to watch two production vehicles going head to head -- with no models laying on the hood, no Photoshopping, and no fine print. I don't want to give anything away here, but let's just say marketing isn't everything.
When it comes to bolting on a costly solar array up on your roof, you come across a laundry list of common concerns. For example, some people say they look ugly. Well, innovative solar companies like Solarcentury are listening, and they're making great progress in overcoming a few of the aesthetic complaints. They've created a set of solar roof tiles that actually sit flush with your slate or tiled roof, helping your solar project blend in from ground level.
Being integrated into you actual roof tiles, Solarcentury's tiles also solve the problem of water pooling around your panels and causing leaks. Plus, they've got to be more difficult to steal. The "UK's fastest growing energy company" has put together this helpful video to answer all of the typical questions asked by those interested in investing in a solar array: What's the installation like? Does it really save you any money? What about your home's resale value? If they can make electricity meters run backwards in chronically gloomy London, they must be doing something right.
The new PETA ad starring Christine Dolce, aka MySpace star "ForBiddeN" is flat out gory. Besides a big heap of cleavage, the main elements are: blood, gore and a very disturbing skinned rabbit that I'm going to guess is fake.
Everyone's favorite pixie (all apologies to Frank Black) has joined forces with the U.S. Department of Energy to encourage kids (of all ages) to use energy with more efficiency.
Tinker Bell and her friends from Pixie Hollow are one with the planet and as such green is a way of life. Of course Tink's time in Pixie Hollow was over years ago and her current digs at Disneyland tend to use a bit more electricity than a meadow of grass and toadstools, but we believe that her heart is in the right place.
If you have kids (or too much free time) then check out this site for more info and interactive fun.
Considering GM's track record, I definitely had reservations that the most anticipated EV would somehow dissolve and never find its way to consumers -- like the EV1, ahem. And while it's still not at the local dealership, GM pulled back the curtain last week and let the media take a good long gander at the struggling automaker's hope for the next century. By most accounts, things are looking pretty positive for 2010.
This week, not only do we get pictures of what the Volt will look like, but our friends at ABG have uncovered video footage documenting the mysterious creature in its natural habitat. As best I can tell, not only does the Volt actually exist, but it appears to drive just like a normal car. As in, you probably wouldn't even notice you were driving an electric car except for the fact that it's eerily quiet. That, plus the fact that the dash is covered up in LCD battery-monitoring displays.
