Karina Smirnoff Goes Naked for PETA

Karina Smirnoff's Ad for PETA/PETA.com

I have to admit that I'm a huge "Dancing With the Stars" fan, especially of professional dancer Karina Smirnoff, with her fiery temper and sassy/skimpy costumes. She's an amazing dancer, and she doesn't put up with any nonsense. Karina is no chump.

Plus she was engaged to super hottie DWTS pro Maks Chmerkovskiy -- but I'm getting off topic. We're here to talk about Karina being naked. For PETA.

Lots of stars have done naked PETA ads, with varying degrees of smolder vs. chastity. Karina's ad, as you would expect, is smoking hot. And the accompanying video? It's so hot and sexy that they had to digitally blur out "certain areas" because she's obviously not wearing any flesh-colored leotard. That's all Karina's skin up there, and she has no problem showing it. She's so cool.

Eco-Beat, 10/9

Will "No Impact Man" convince Stephen Colbert to change his carbon spewing ways for just one week? Could wearing fur actually help the environment? Is it creepy to recycle the heat from crematoriums? Today's Eco-Beat has the scoop on all the latest green news and tips.

No Impact Man Challenges Colbert
Could America's funniest fake conservative talk show host join forces with crazy zero-waste guru Colin Beaven to go "no impact" for one week? In his own words: "No way in hell. In fact, while I'm sitting here, I may just burn a stack of tires."

nutria purse, credit: LaFete d'Ecologie Wear Fur, Save the Wetlands?
It's definitely not a PETA slogan. Righteous Fur, founded by Planet Green contributor Cree McCree, is promoting guilt-free fur products made from the pelts of the invasive and damaging nutria (big dirty rodents). The pelts from trapped nutria would otherwise go to waste.

The infamous Sea Shepherd captain and his controversial whale hunter hunting mission are facing unforeseen setbacks, and it's not even whale season yet. Bowing to the pressure from Japan, Australian officials have reportedly placed a hold on Watson's work Visa.

How does race car driver Leilani Munter compensate for her race car's emissions? Simple, she's a vegetarian. Says Leilani: "Cut back on your meat intake. Grazing animals produce methane which is 21 times more heat trapping than CO2."

A crematorium in Taipei has built an elaborate system to use the heat from its ovens to generate electricity, which then powers the air-conditioning in the waiting room. Apart from the creepiness factor, it's undeniably green ... in a Soylent Green kinda way.

Why are giant angry chickens massing outside Jay Leno's studio? Want to keep up with Alicia Silverstone's "groovy" green finds? Are you a member of the subversive, underground Law Reform Coalition? Today's Eco-Beat has the scoop on all the latest green news and tips.

The concept of buying carbon offsets is a hotly debated moral issue for some green activists ... not because of what it is, but what it represents. If you think of offsets as a contribution to a green energy project, cool. However, they don't "erase" your eco sins.

It's Friday a.k.a. Naked PETA Pamela Anderson Video Day

Summer is over, vacations finished, and it's back to the daily drudgery of working long weeks -- but PETA has a little something special to get your weekend off to a bangin' start: Pam Anderson as a sexy TSA agent!

Yeah. Like at the airport! Only instead of keeping people from sneaking on bombs, or box cutters, Pammie keeps them from bringing fur or leather on board.

The campaign is called "Cruelty Doesn't Fly", and wow, it took some serious nerve to launch it so close to the anniversary of September 11th. But PETA is nothing if not shockingly inappropriate -- hey, they're trying to save bunnies! And goats! This is frickin' serious, folks.

PETA and Andy Dick Take Their Anti-McDonald's Campaign to the Talk Show Circuit

This video of Andy Dick, dressed as a cleaver-brandishing Ronald McDonald, and talking to fake talk show host Jiminy Glick is many things:

  • hilarious
  • disgusting
  • misguided
  • riveting
  • still hilarious
Love 'em or hate 'em, PETA knows how to play the media like an army of puppets. Even if some of us are relatively uninspired by the plight of McDonald's chickens (obviously I don't condone cruelty to animals but priorities, people, priorities), none of us can resist the spectacle of a mass-murdering fast-food clown trash talking chickens.

It's Rough Being an Elephant

Asian elephant in the water. Credit: KAREN BLEIER, Getty Images

Remember earlier this year when baby elephant Mosha got a prosthetic leg thanks to Friends of the Asian Elephants, in Thailand? Well, those kind folks have provided another elephant, 48 year old Motola, with an artificial leg, to replace the one that she lost to a land mine 10 years ago.

Motola has been "practicing" with a temporary limb for three years, in order to get the muscles and tendons ready for her permanent leg. Even though she was a bit tentative putting weight on her new limb, she seemed pretty happy, spraying dirt to express her excitement.

Elephants used to be the primary form of transportation in Thailand, but they've been replaced by cars and trucks. Today one of the few roles left for elephants is providing rides to tourists, but that's still a rough life.

In these tough economic times, do you need some free tickets to Farm Aid? Do you trust Julia Stiles' fashion sense? Is PETA showing signs of weakness? Today's Eco-Beat has the scoop on all the latest green news and tips.

When the BPA story broke, Sigg's aluminum bottles were offered up as the clear alternative to plastic. But are they really BPA-free? It turns out, the lining inside SIGG bottles made before August of 2008 do leach a tiny amount (below "detectable levels") of BPA.

Ever since the "Clueless" star switched to a plant-based diet in 1998, people starting asking "What have you done? You're sparkling." Honestly though, I doubt that's the first time anyone told her she was "sparkling."

Why are feminist groups up in arms over the new PETA billboards? Why are Ted Turner and T. Boone Pickens combining their magical money powers? Would you drink wine from a plastic bottle? Today's Eco-Beat has the scoop on all the latest green news and tips.

In their most blatantly offensive attempt to convert non-believers in at least the last six months, PETA has launched a new billboard campaign featuring an obese woman and the slogan "Save the whales. Lose the blubber: Go vegetarian." Wow, that's constructive.

To save space and cut down on shipping weight, some wine makers are looking into making the switch to plastic. Aside from the fact that it seems totally unappealing from a consumer standpoint, it could reduce shipping emissions. I think I'll stick with boxed wine.

The Onion Accuses PETA of Misogyny and it's Halfway True

Advocacy Group Decries PETA's Inhumane Treatment Of Women

It's about time someone took on the woman-haters of PETA. I speak of course of The Onion's exposé of the extreme animal rights group's misogynistic attitudes and practices. In the video above, a spokeswoman for "Women Deserve Better" talks about PETA's cruel practices like making them hold live animals against their naked bodies or putting them in shackels and sticking them in cages.

It does sound bad when it put it like that!

In addition to these ugly acts, PETA also makes them sit through long photo shoots and feeds them nut dogs. High crimes indeed. "Women Deserve Better" hope to rescue these "hundreds" of women, and take them to a farm where they can live out their lives in peace. Presumably away from vegetarian protesters.

Lady Gaga to Get Naked With Nia Long - PETA's Wishful Thinking

Sexy Nia Long, star of lighthearted fare like "Big Momma's House" and "Are We There Yet" is taking on a more serious subject. The animal lover is the latest star of the PETA "I'd rather go naked than wear fur" campaign.

First things first -- Nia is 38 and still smoking hot. Second, she's wearing some fantastic shoes, and I'm guessing they're vegan, because if nothing else those PETA people are single-minded in their attention to detail. The world is changing when I'm coveting shoes in a PETA ad!

Speaking of PETA's single-minded pursuit of publicity and nudity, by now you've heard that Lady Gaga is the latest celebrity to top their wishlist. They were really impressed by her latest muppet-murdering fashion statement.

Friends of the Earth Go Naked to Protest Fraud

Taking a page out of the PETA Playbook, relatively radical environmental group Friends of the Earth staged a pants-free protest last Friday. TGIF indeed!

What prompted this display of angry, pasty, activist skin? Nothing less than fraud and forgery by D.C. lobbying firm Bonner & Associates. In an effort to prevent the Waxman-Markey energy and climate bill from passing, an employee of the firm reportedly sent forged letters (arguing against the bill) from two Virgina grassroots organizations, the NAACP and Cresciendo Juntos to Rep. Tom Perriello (D-Va).

Bonner & Associates, which is in the pay of the fossil fuel industry, swears that they fired the employee responsible for the fake letters. But seriously, you know they have half a dozen (at least!) amateur Photoshop whizzes on the payroll, probably already working on an forged epistolary novella detailing Ralph Nader's love for dirty coal power and strip mining.

Sexy Vegan Makeup is Not an Oxymoron

Just catching up on my Greeading* after a week away from the "office" and SheFind's post Vegan Makeup That's Friendlier To Animals Than Hayden Panettiere caught my eye for a couple of reasons, including the fear that a dolphin had attacked her. Because that's what they do (sometimes) and also what mammal could resist Miss Panettiere?

But no, the post was about vegan makeup, which is also really fun. SheFinds reviewed four vegan brands, including one of my green favorites, von Natur. This line is amazing because it's a) totally organic, b) vegan, c) has kick-ass colors, plus d) the lipgloss has this addictive minty goodness that's hard to explain, but you want to experience it, believe me.

Also on the list was Urban Decay's 24/7 Glide on Eye Pencil, which I adore, and had no idea was vegan. Again, fantastic colors, and cruelty-free.

When you want to present a friend/date/etc. with a leafy gift, avoid cut flowers and go for something living. Not only will this reduce your dating-print, but your gift will last a lot longer, usually. I recommend something very east to take care of, like a cactus, but that's just me.
