Five ways to reuse Father's Day cards

First off, Happy Fathers Day! I know that we've covered cards before but I thought that I'd reopen the topic as I not only have Mother's Day cards hanging out on my fireplace mantle but some Father's Day cards as well. I've found a few clever ways to reuse them over the course of the coming year.
  1. Box. Father's Day cards usually have goofy pictures on them that are worth saving. Turn those cards into a box with these handy instructions and use them for an upcoming gift giving occasion or for next year's tie tack.
  2. Bookmark. If Dad likes to read, you can make him a bookmark to appreciate all year long.
  3. Compost. That card doesn't even have to leave the yard. Just rip it up a couple of times and throw it in the compost pile.
  4. Toys. Cut out any images of people or items from the card and attach to popsicle sticks for a mini puppet performance.
  5. Save it. If you've got small children and a forgetful Dad, you can always stow the card away for next year.

Five ways to reuse neckties

Neckties are magnets for greasy stains. Too messy a meal can make your favorite silk accessory unwearable. Then there are those novelty ties that are hiding in the back of your closet right now. Instead of tossing them in the trash, try these five tips for reusing neckties.

  1. Dress up. Donate your ties to a child's costume box. You can even pre-knot them and stitch the folds in place.
  2. Handbag. Turn those ties into a fabulous handbag.
  3. Belt. The right tie can spruce up the waist of a simple dress or add extra zing to the belt loops of jeans. No sewing needed!
  4. Coffee sleeve. Our buddies over at DIY Life have instructions on how to turn a necktie into a coffee sleeve for Father's Day.
  5. Chair seat. Weave ties to create a new seat for a ladder back chair.I love this idea because it saves two items destined for the landfill and it looks great.

Skip the Hallmark this Father's Day

If you're planning on giving Dad a card this Father's Day, consider skipping store-bought options. Considering the paper usage, the almost immediately disregarded envelope, the emissions from the shipments to the store, and the cost to the consumer, it just makes financial and and environmental sense.

If you are feeling artistic, pull out some recycled paper and whip one up yourself. In fact, you can even make your own envelope using eco-friendly paper products, magazine pages, swatches of wallpaper, and more.

If arts and crafts aren't your thing, think about e-cards. Instead of just any old "happy father's day," why not send him an environmentally-minded card? WWF currently has several animal-themed free e-cards for the occasion.

Is dad a golf enthusiast?

For Father's Day, forget overpriced brunches - instead, take Pops on an outing he'll actually enjoy - golfing, GreenDaily style.

Specifically, golfing on an environmentally-friendly course. According to the U.S. Golf Association, about 1,000 courses are using recycled or reclaimed water, new grass is being developed that requires less water to thrive, and courses are returning to a more natural existence (read: no over-seeding or over-watering the grass). This is a huge improvement, considering that Audobon International estimates that each of Palm Springs' 57 golf courses use up to one million gallons of water a day.

That said, take a look at a compilation of some of the best golf spots in the U.S., where you can worry about making par instead of pesticides.

Dads are harder to find gifts for than moms

I don't know about you, but I find it harder to come up with Father's Day gifts for the dads in my life than the Moms. Mother's Day seems much easier. You can always rely on the old fallbacks, like flowers (hopefully organic), but dads can be tough. I mean, how many ties or golf shirts or UroClubs does one guy need?

Then, like the moms, you want to be careful that you don't get gifts that signal that you want beloved Dad to do some work around the house, just like you want to be careful with Mom. Although, I hear that toolboxes, especially big ones, are a hot item this year. Eco-friendly? Sure! If it's big enough, it could last forever, unlike those small ones.

Here are a few ideas that I picked up from Amazon Green..Gift at your own discretion!

Anyone have some good ideas that have been a hit over the years?

Get dad some eco-scotch

Mother's Day is usually a breeze, almost anyone can come up with some good green ideas given a minute or two. For whatever reason, coming up with a good Father's Day present can be a real pain. Well, if you're dad happens to like a good single-malt scotch -- your days of shopping agony might be over.

Benromach Organic is handmade from raw ingredients, and every step in the distilling process has been certified organic by the UK's Soil Association. This organic whisky is made from local ingredients from the Scottish highlands and then aged in American oak casks that come from environmentally-managed forests. So, whether it's you or your dad that's green, you can be pretty sure that you've got some high quality booze -- and for under $50. If he's not into scotch, there are some green vodkas and rums out there too.

This would be great in combination with the UroClub, if you're dad's a golfer. You know, because one usually leads to the other.

The UroClub: The golf club that doubles as a urinal

Here at Green Daily, we like to come up with interesting, eco-friendly, and practical gifts for the holidays. Well, this one is interesting, and practical (I think) and relatively eco-friendly.

Introducing the UroClub.

Developed by a urologist, the UroClub looks like a standard golf club, but inside lurks a half-liter urinal, which is twice the volume urinated. It also includes a privacy shield that looks like a towel, letting the golfer relieve themselves on the course, and still enjoy all the drinks they want while they are out on the course. Sweet. The cap opens easily according to the manufacturer, always a good thing, and is leakproof.

The UroClub can be yours (or a lucky dad's) for only $49.95.

Over at ThinkGreenThinkBeyond.com, you can get a customized seal placed on a t-shirt, hat, bag, clock, button, canvas bag -- almost anything you can imagine! Plus, these beautifully-designed seals come in a wide variety of choices, all proclaiming your love for the specific cause of your choice. There's everything from state-specific seals to seals about going green to going organic to renewable energy interests and much more. Keep in mind, when they say custom, they mean custom. You can make a special order for no extra cost, and get your (or your father's) name right on the graphic. Check it out!

Student gifts for a green Father's Day

Students might be on a budget, but that doesn't mean they can't get something nifty for Dad. Here are my top five cheap, meaningful, and environmentally friendly gifts for Father's Day.
  1. Using recycled or scrap material, make Dad a card or even a collage. Consider recycled paper, scrap paper or fabric, cut-outs from old magazines, and pens and markers you have lying around the house.
  2. Treat Dad to coffee in a fair trade cafe, and catch up on what's new. He'll appreciate hearing about your college experiences, and having some quality time with just the two of you.
  3. Buy something used. In fact, with the money you save, you might be able to buy a few things used. Take a trip to some used bookstores and garage sales.
  4. Support your university by purchasing from the campus bookstore. A travel mug that says "(your school) Dad!" can be a fun way to get him to fill up at coffee shops to cut down on waste and feel proud at the same time.
  5. Does Dad have a green thumb, or a dreary looking office space? Consider giving him a plant that he can look at every day and think of you. If you already have a plant, look into dividing it and giving him part of it.

Recycled PET plastic suits

We're all about buying second-hand here at Green Daily, but with suits, we realize that suits that don't fit right can make you feel/look stupid -- so it's one of those things you kinda want to get off the rack. Now, I don't know many people who shop for a suit at Sears, but now you might have a reason to give it a try. It turns out that they're selling a 100% post-consumer, machine washable suit made out of recycled plastic bottles -- and it doesn't look half bad either.

The 'EcoGir Recycled' suit is available at Sears stores in the US this Father's Day for about $200. Bagir, the designer responsible for the suit has a popular lineup of eco-friendly suits in the UK, although they're not particularly well known in the States. That's why Sears will be marketing them under its Covington label. The suits will be sporting a carbon label, tracking the suit's footprint from raw materials to transportation.
