eBay Green: Cabbage Patch candidates

The following item would make an ideal gift for any fan of dolls, Cabbage Patch collectors, one-of-a-kind fanatics, who love their favored political candidate so much, they'd like to take him/her to bed (or keep on a shelf, whichever).

Until November 4th at 5 a.m., you have a chance to acquire your very own John McCain, Sarah Palin, Joe Biden, or Barack Obama Cabbage Patch original. There is no other like it, and the proceeds are going to charity. You can hop over and bid, as they are only available on eBay.

Of course, some of these 'Kids' are mightily expensive. So far, Joe Biden is the least favored, and you could snap him up relatively cheaply, as the current bid stands at only $843 USD.

Amusingly enough, John McCain isn't going for much higher. Maybe he just doesn't seem cuddly, because the current bid for the doll in his likeness is $1,700 USD.

Barack Obama, the charismatic, handsome one of the bunch doesn't top the auction list. With a current top bid of $3,552.99 USD, Sarah Palin beats him with a whopping top bid of $9,800.00 USD!

Even if you aren't willing to shell out $10k just for a delightful Palin voodoo doll (that you can take to global warming education classes), watching how the bids turn out will be true entertainment.

eBay Green: Bart Simpson in soapstone

Unlike some of the items featured on eBay Green, this item is legitimately eco-friendly, although it might not look it. The Bart Simpson soapstone sculpture is made and packaged in Kenya, conserving energy and economically empowering the people.

The process and materials used are true to African traditions, and the whole partnership is fair trade certified.

You might remember a few weeks back when I featured the Homer Simpson reusable shopping bag. When I found this sculpture, I knew I had to do a follow-up post. After all, if you feel the need to decorate your home and person in The Simpsons-inspired items, then this is a must-have.

After all, the soapstone sculptures of the majestic orca, the mighty polar bear, or the delicate doe can't hold a green candle to a Bart Simpson head on your mantel!

eBay Green: Flip flop elephant

Recently we published an article featuring one of my favorite eBay stores, WorldofGood.com. Not only do they sell clearly labeled items that are eco-friendly, socially responsible, fair trade, and/or for charities, but the items themselves make very unique gifts.

Enter the Flip Flop Elephant. Made from recycled flip flops rescued from an afterlife of polluting our planet, this colorful beast is completely unique, as the differently colored flip flops meet to create something special.

Honestly, I'd rather have this guy on my shelf than flip flops on my feet any day.

Not fond of elephants? They also sell rhinos, hippos, water buffaloes, and wild boar. If the $69.99 price tag is too high, they have baby versions that are smaller but just as interesting, at a modest $22.50.

Of all of the weird finds we've featured thus far on eBay Green, this elephant has to be my favorite.

eBay Green: Beijing Olympics pin

For the past few months, and especially these recent weeks, the news has been awash with props and criticism aimed at Beijing's efforts at creating a green Olympic games.

Just in case your friends and coworkers aren't sick of the hype yet, you can now sport a daily reminder by purchasing one of these lapel pins from Topazminer Collectibles on eBay.

Whether you'd wear it for the irony, or simply to show your support for the changes they made, it's sure to be a conversation starter.

According to the seller, these are true collectibles, and many of the pins were given directly to athletes and other personnel at past Olympic games.

Of course, considering you can buy the pins for the 2010 games in Vancouver, and the 2012 pins in London already, you probably aren't buying any that have actually changed hands with athletes.

I would also wonder just how these pins are made. While they boast a green graphical design, they leave out any mention of the pins being constructed from sustainable or recycled materials.

Still, what is more fashionable than a pin labeled "environment?"

eBay Green: Homer bag

This week, eBay Green will be examining the latest thing in green shopping: the reusable fabric shopping tote.

Sold at the checkout counter in grocery stores and pharmacies everywhere, consumers are gradually catching on to the green fashion trend.

In fact, you can even get cute and sassy bags, rather than get stuck carrying around a tote advertising the name of your grocery store in the name of a green planet.

Department stores like Target and Wal-Mart have hopped on the bandwagon, and even high-end designers have started making the totes.

It is this trend that brings us to the topic at hand: the Homer bag.

eBay Green: Sexy soy pouch

Have you been looking for the perfect midsummer gift for your man? 2(x)ist undies might be just the ticket! These briefs made from soy are designed to be comfortable and to accentuate one's assets.

While we've reported on these beauties before, while browsing eBay this weekend I couldn't help but notice some new details when I landed upon an auction for a pair.

For starters, if you've been worried about bacterial infections, then this natural soy bean fiber blend is your best bet because it is "naturally anti-microbial."

Yep; these undies keep your man's um, man parts, smelling fresher!

eBay Green: Heat Cell

Each week, eBay Green brings you another "environmentally friendly" gizmo for your reading pleasure, amusement, and derision.

This week we will be examining heat in a can.

Now, whenever I've been camping, I built fires to cook over, and so the concept of the Heat Cell seems strange to me, and reminds me of such canned wonders as Spam, Cheeseburger in a Can, Wine in a Can, and the ever-popular Fart in a Can.

Once you can get past the 'in a can' giggle factor, you will be pleased to note that allegedly, this fuel source is environmentally friendly.

eBay Green: Obama for the environment

Considering this week's theme is green government, I thought it fitting to do a related search on eBay. Immediately, I came upon two buttons for the Obama campaign, valued at $7 as a starting bid.

What I found strange about these buttons in particular was the fact that they actually worked.

"Environmentalists for Obama" and "Obama for a Clean Energy Future" did indeed make me want to research more of his policies. It also sent me on an Obama-related search tangent.

For example, Obama has some ambitious energy goals, although there is some debate as to whether or not he has the gumption to realize them.

So, uncertain of these promises, I went searching for answers on eBay.

eBay Green: Just like Colonel Sanders!

This week's eBay find reminds average U.S. citizens that they are capitalist. Why not combine recycling with earning money, they ask? In fact, they recommend their guidebook to profiting by recycling to a diverse range of characters.

According to them, this product might work for you, whether you're in High School and want to make serious cash without a greasy hamburger job, or whether you're 66 and want to make a fresh start (just like Colonel Sanders!).

Now, I'd like to see the high school student who thinks "man, if only I liked flipping burgers, I could make serious cash!"

Wealthy Home Business also asks you what this $6.85 guide might be worth to you (and keep in mind, you can resell the guide!). Hundreds? Thousands? MILLIONS!?!

eBay Green: Purifying the environment

The official title of this auction is "Orgone radionics hexagon tachyon purifies environment." It's quite the mouthful for this statue from Decorative Orgone. Although they have much prettier ones with other claims, this one promises to purify the environment.

Although they primarily cite research and other websites in order to describe their products, here are some of the "claims" this $35-$60 statue is making.

  1. Orgone can purify the atmosphere, detoxify water and end drought.
  2. Helps plants grow by acting as a natural pesticide, and by reducing the amount of water needed.
  3. Can counterbalance some of the harmful effects of radiation.
  4. Among other things like enhancing moods and helping you sleep, it can enhance your psychic abilities.
