1940's
World War II makes it mark on fashion in this decade. War rations mean conserving fabric and forgoing metal zippers for snaps and hooks. Clothes are tailored, and standard sizing makes it's debut. Hemlines are up just below the knee and some women even start wearing pants to work as they take over for the men in factories. Hollywood reamins a serious driver for fashion, however. Sequins were unrationed and used liberally for evening wear, as were rhinestones. Men traveling overseas bring back Asian influences and the Hawiian shirt. *Terms to search: WWII, '40s, glamour *Fun Finds: bakelite accessories, skirts, military influenced pieces, wide ties, hawiian shirts, fedorasFeb 11th 2008 @ 1:28PM
