Check for Drainage

Good drainage is vital to the health of plants. Here's how to test:
Dig a hole the size of a coffee can and fill it with water. How long does it take to drain? 1 hour or less indicates sandy soil that doesn't hold enough water. 2-3 hours is ideal. Over 3 hours indicates poorly draining clay soil or possibly uneven drainage patterns. Be sure to level off the low and high points to create better drainage flow.
