Figure out the Composition
*Now it's time to determine the type of soil you have. Ideally, loam is what you want - a mixture of 40% sand, 40% silt and 20% clay.*There are a few ways to check. Try squeezing a handful of soil into a ball. With your thumb and forefinger, rub the soil to make it into a ribbon. If you cannot form a ribbon, the soil has to omuch sand. If you can make a ribbon of soil more than 3 inches long, it is more than 50% clay.
