The Jar Test

Another way to determine the texture of your soil is the jar test.
*Put an inch of dry soil in the bottom of a tall jar. Fill 2/3 full of water and add 1 tsp. or salt or dish detergent. Shake the jar and let the soil settle. The sand will settle first. The silt will take half the day to settle and the clay will take 24 hours. Measure your layers. 40/40/20 is what you want.
