Amend the Soil

*Once you know your starting point, it's time to amend the soil with compost. Adding compost increases the amount of critical organic material in your soil. It retains water and provides nutrients. It also sustains bacteria and fungi, protozoa and nematodes, mites, springtails, earthworms and other tiny creatures found in healthy soil.
*Amending soil is also the way to change it's structure. Work 3-4 inches into sandy soil, 2-3 inches for clay soil. Add 1 inch each year to silty soil.
*Since compost retains water more efficiently, amending the soil will also improve drainage in sandy or clay soils.
