napkinsHave you noticed the pile of napkins that get thrown into your to-go bag from fast food places and restaurants? I try to hang onto them for future use but it is getting a little out of hand. One way to lower your consumption of napkins is to try to ask for less when you have a chance. Otherwise, you can save them in your car for unexpected messes or in case nature calls in the outdoors, you can compost the napkins in layers, or recycle them with your other paper goods. Whatever you do just don't throw them into the trash.

Don't rinse.
If you have a dishwasher you're probably somewhat annoyed because half the time you practically have to wash the dishes before you wash the dishes. That might not be unavoidable in some cases of super stuck on yuckiness, but do you really have to rinse everything? If you skip washing the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher you could save as much as 20 gallons of water per load, plus the energy needed to heat the extra water.

How hard is it really to let that little dishwasher trap catch a few bits of debris?

If you're worried about all the chemicals, preservatives, and other questionable ingredients you can't even pronounce that are found in many commercially produced toothpastes, why not make your own? It's easier to do than you probably think, in fact here's a recipe I found over at Care2:

Homemade Toothpaste

1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp sea salt, finely ground
1 drop peppermint, spearmint, sweet orange, clove, or cinnamon bark essential oil (for flavor)
A few drops water

Mix the ingredients together in a bowl until a smooth, thick paste forms (if the paste is too runny it won't stay on your toothbrush).


Done! Now just use it as you would regular store bought toothpaste. Any ideas for handy storage/dispensing?

The official date for the start of Daylight Savings Time is Sunday, March 8th, at 2 a.m. While an early goal of Daylight Savings Time was to save energy, studies show that very little energy is saved as a result of DST, as our lives have becomes so plugged in, regardless of what the clock says. In another downside, other studies have shown that gasoline consumption goes up during Daylight Savings Time.

Whether or not Daylight Savings Time actually saves energy, most of us look forward to the extra hour of light in the evening, especially after a long, dark winter.

Having a light on all night while you sleep is definitely not the greenest thing to do, but whether you've got a child who's afraid of the dark or you've stubbed your toe one too many times on the way to the bathroom at midnight, sometimes you've gotta do what you've gotta do. So, if not having a night light is not an option you can at least get an eco-friendly version. Good choices would be something either motion activated (turns on when you approach to save you a toe-stubbing) or on a timer (stays on while your kids are falling asleep and then turns off) and definitely lit with an LED as opposed to a regular little bulb. Any other suggestions?

Instead of trying to wash everything in cold water and becoming frustrated, shoot for a goal that is reasonable for you. The New American Dream suggests aiming to make 80% of the loads you wash cold wash/cold rinse cycles. Just taking this simple step could cut 72 pounds of carbon emissions in one month alone.

Even if 80% is too high, try aiming for half! It doesn't have to be all-or-nothing.

Many plastic shower curtains and liners are made of PVC, and if you've had one, you most likely got hit with its characteristic new-shower-curtain-smell the minute you pulled it out of the package.

The smell comes from up to one hundred toxic chemicals including phthalates. According to CHEJ, recent studies have shown that adult men with average amounts of phthalates, chemicals that give PVC that soft quality, had lower levels of testosterone and estrogen in their systems. Babies are also at risk as phthalates can pass from pregnant women to their unborn babies. Dibutylin, a chemical used in PVC, can affect immune response.

What to do? Avoid PVC curtains or liners, and switch up to an EVA shower curtain. EVA is a safer plastic and is not made with chlorine, making it more eco-friendly than PVC.

Here is a sample of an EVA shower curtain from 3R Living, in such groovy patterns as Dinosaurs and The Periodic Table. Also, you might want to think about just going with one of these fabric shower curtains. While they can be a bit pricey, they are washable and could be worth it.

Take your green cleaning to the next level.I've already been using mostly eco-friendly cleaning products around my home, but one thing I haven't always focused on is buying concentrated green cleaning products whenever I can. Concentrated products need less space, which means they use less packaging and use less energy in production, as well as leave less waste behind (even if you recycle) than their non-concentrated counterparts. And items that normally get tossed, like spray nozzles, can be reused indefinitely.

Last year, The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics reported that up to 61% of lipsticks contained lead. This report led the FDA to say it would conduct an independent investigation. Well, guess what? That hasn't happened. Complicating the issue, lead is not a listed ingredient, making it impossible to just read the labels in the store in an effort to avoid or minimize your exposure. Further compounding the issue, according to EWG, lead helps the color stay on longer, a desirable quality for lipsticks.

What to do? The safest option is probably going without lipstick altogether. If you can't live without it, here are a list of 13 lipsticks that were shown to have negligible lead levels, from the testing done by Campaign for Safe Cosmetics a year ago:

One of the most effective ways to maximize your car's fuel economy is to avoid fast starts and stops, but since "fast" is such a subjective term, for some it's a tip that's easier said than done. A good trick for keeping things smooth and steady is to watch your tachometer gauge (that rarely used dial next to your speedometer) and keep your RPMs down to a reasonable level, which for most vehicles means not pushing it harder than 3000 rpms when accelerating.

lint brushPesky lint and pet hair is frustrating to have on your clothes and many choose a tape-covered lint roller to remove it. But that isn't the greenest option available. Tape-covered rollers are useful but sheets are discarded quickly adding to your trash over time. A reusable lint brush is efficient and easy to use without waste. Plus, they are reasonably priced and don't wear out over time. Clearly reusable is the way to go.
