I try to hang onto them for future use but it is getting a little out of hand. One way to lower your consumption of napkins is to try to ask for less when you have a chance. Otherwise, you can save them in your car for unexpected messes or in case nature calls in the outdoors, you can compost the napkins in layers, or recycle them with your other paper goods. Whatever you do just don't throw them into the trash.
Napkins originally appeared on Green Daily on Tue, 31 Mar 2009 07:40:00 EST . Apparently many commercial forms are coated in PVC which is a toxic chemical known to off-gas. Just like choosing low- or no-VOC paints over the regular brand in selecting Mod Green Pod wallpaper you are helping to make your home environment more eco-friendly. Graphically spectacular and eco-minded, Mod Green Pod wallpaper follows Global Organic Textile Standards making their wall coverings vinyl-free and produced with water-based inks on 100% certified organic cotton-based fabric. I just love finding better alternatives to the status quo.

[via Inhabitat]
Mod Green Pod Wallpaper originally appeared on Green Daily on Mon, 30 Mar 2009 07:46:00 EST . I'll be in a bookstore or at the checkout line and see a headline I think is important to investigate further. Before I know it there are stacks of read and dog-eared mags in my house and recycling bin. In an effort to be greener and save some green I am forgoing my habit in favor of online reading or simply visiting my local library. And if you find yourself dying to know what's inside of a new magazine at the bookstore read the article, make some notes for yourself and return it to the shelf. Who's with me!
Magazine Mayhem originally appeared on Green Daily on Tue, 24 Mar 2009 07:47:00 EST . Measuring only 2.25 inches tall and 2 inches in diameter the Eggling fits into anyone's lifestyle providing fresh grown herbs for cooking or other uses for just $12. Choose from basil, cactus, red pepper, mint, strawberry or lavender and when the tiny ceramic eggs arrive gently crack open the top and watch your green thumb in action. These little gardens are sure to add a little spring to your day.
Tiny Herb Garden originally appeared on Green Daily on Mon, 23 Mar 2009 07:33:00 EST . That might not be unavoidable in some cases of super stuck on yuckiness, but do you really have to rinse everything? If you skip washing the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher you could save as much as 20 gallons of water per load, plus the energy needed to heat the extra water.

How hard is it really to let that little dishwasher trap catch a few bits of debris?
Don't Rinse originally appeared on Green Daily on Wed, 18 Mar 2009 06:00:00 EST . Gather all your gently-used or unused beauty products that you won't use like wrong color lipsticks, unwanted nail polish and poorly chosen perfumes. Invite your friends to bring their misfit cosmetics and host a beauty swap! It's easier to do than you probably think, in fact here's a recipe I found over at Care2:

Homemade Toothpaste

1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp sea salt, finely ground
1 drop peppermint, spearmint, sweet orange, clove, or cinnamon bark essential oil (for flavor)
A few drops water

Mix the ingredients together in a bowl until a smooth, thick paste forms (if the paste is too runny it won't stay on your toothbrush).

Done! Now just use it as you would regular store bought toothpaste. Any ideas for handy storage/dispensing?

Make Your Own Toothpaste originally appeared on Green Daily on Wed, 11 Mar 2009 06:00:00 EST . So, if not having a night light is not an option you can at least get an eco-friendly version. Good choices would be something either motion activated (turns on when you approach to save you a toe-stubbing) or on a timer (stays on while your kids are falling asleep and then turns off) and definitely lit with an LED as opposed to a regular little bulb. Any other suggestions?
Get a Greener Night Light originally appeared on Green Daily on Wed, 04 Mar 2009 06:00:00 EST . However, let's be honest, sometimes a cold water wash and rinse is just not going to cut it.

Instead of trying to wash everything in cold water and becoming frustrated, shoot for a goal that is reasonable for you. The New American Dream suggests aiming to make 80% of the loads you wash cold wash/cold rinse cycles. Just taking this simple step could cut 72 pounds of carbon emissions in one month alone.

Even if 80% is too high, try aiming for half! It doesn't have to be all-or-nothing.

[Via Enviromom]
Cold Water Laundry, Give It a Try! originally appeared on Green Daily on Fri, 27 Feb 2009 06:00:00 EST . According to CHEJ, recent studies have shown that adult men with average amounts of phthalates, chemicals that give PVC that soft quality, had lower levels of testosterone and estrogen in their systems. Babies are also at risk as phthalates can pass from pregnant women to their unborn babies. Dibutylin, a chemical used in PVC, can affect immune response.

What to do? Avoid PVC curtains or liners, and switch up to an EVA shower curtain. EVA is a safer plastic and is not made with chlorine, making it more eco-friendly than PVC.

Here is a sample of an EVA shower curtain from 3R Living, in such groovy patterns as Dinosaurs and The Periodic Table. Also, you might want to think about just going with one of these fabric shower curtains. While they can be a bit pricey, they are washable and could be worth it.
Upgrade Your Shower Curtain originally appeared on Green Daily on Fri, 20 Feb 2009 06:00:00 EST . It can act as a rinse aid in the dishwasher, a brightener and freshener in the laundry, or even a disinfectant on commonly touched items like light switches. It even has personal uses including deodorizing your underarms or solving diaper rash. Don't stop there -- take this wonder liquid out to the garden too using it to eliminate weeds! This report led the FDA to say it would conduct an independent investigation. Well, guess what? That hasn't happened. Complicating the issue, lead is not a listed ingredient, making it impossible to just read the labels in the store in an effort to avoid or minimize your exposure. Further compounding the issue, according to EWG, lead helps the color stay on longer, a desirable quality for lipsticks.

What to do? The safest option is probably going without lipstick altogether. If you can't live without it, here are a list of 13 lipsticks that were shown to have negligible lead levels, from the testing done by Campaign for Safe Cosmetics a year ago:

A good trick for keeping things smooth and steady is to watch your tachometer gauge (that rarely used dial next to your speedometer) and keep your RPMs down to a reasonable level, which for most vehicles means not pushing it harder than 3000 rpms when accelerating.
Tip of the Day: Use Your Tachometer to Save Gas originally appeared on Green Daily on Wed, 11 Feb 2009 06:00:00 EST .
