Apparently, this got quite a few environmentalists ticked off, according to Dan Mitchell of the NY Times. Aiming such greenwashing at adults is one thing, but when it's aimed at children? Jen Phillips on Mother Jones said that the whole line was pretty ironic considering that the dolls are made of plastic and packaged in plastic.

I covered the press release for the launch of Barbie BCause line here. All I know is, I honestly thought the original press release that I stumbled across was a joke and I made sure I found a copy on Mattel's site. Why? It just sounded kind of odd, and my skepticism was up that day, as it was April Fool's Day.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Burt's Bees "Baby Bee" Kit

This might just be the perfect little add-on to a baby shower gift or new baby gift: The Burt's Bees Baby Bee Getting Started Kit.

The Baby Bee Getting Started Kit comes with a sample of baby oil, lotion, bath wash, soap, diaper ointment, powder and shampoo bar. The database contains safety alerts from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The database does not contain food and medication recalls from the FDA.

You can sign up for CPSC recalls directly also, for the future. How she would buy one off of the big roll at a stationary store, and she had to get someone from the store to help you make the big purchase. Paul laments how inexpensive stickers have become now, that we can buy literally hundreds of them for under ten bucks, how they have lost their zing, and how "in our abundance, something has been lost."

According to Paul's article, the average American child receives 70 new toys a year. The U.S has only 4 percent of the world's children, yet we consume 40 percent of the world's toys. Paul suggests only offering toys that are "10% toy, 90% child," meaning they require some imagination. She also suggests that perhaps we need to raise the price of toys, so that we learn to value them again. Or we could just buy less of them.

No matter what, I can't think of a kid that needs 70 toys a year. Yikes. And putting this all in perspective, be sure to read this New York Times article on labor in China, child labor that is.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Method baby wash now with marshmallows!

Filed under: Kids and Parenting, Shopping Guide
Yesterday I reviewed Method Kid shampoo and today I'd like to give a review of Method Baby wash as well. Method baby squeaky green hair + body wash is one of the newest additions to Method's growing line of cleaners. With growing concerns about the toxins that I put on my baby's skin, I was drawn to the phthalate-free promise on the bottle.

The two main ingredients listed on the face of the packaging are rice milk and mallow (as in marsh mallow, one of the original ingredients in my favorite puffed confection). Both are mild enough for baby and beneficial to the skin.

Again, the packaging is eye-catching. It features a removable "cap" that acts as a cup for rinsing baby and I love the pump dispenser for perfect one-hand action. My only complaint is that the cap is a bit superfluous as I already have a dozen plastic cups in the tub.

The soap itself has a mild scent and keeps my baby clean -- not that babies get terribly dirty anyway. I'm definitely a fan and would buy it again.

In addition to the soap, the Method Baby line also includes a lotion and diaper cream.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Rubbermaid's Litterless Juice Box

Looking for inexpensive, yet safe, reusable bottles for you and your kids and you don't want to spend a ton?

Take a look at Rubbermaid. For example, here is their "Litterless Juice Box," shown to the right. It's made of #5 Polypropylene plastic, a plastic recommended as safe. #5 Polypropylene is also recyclable in many communities, not that you'll be throwing this out any time soon. It carries 8.5 oz of juice or water and costs around $3. Not bad.

Here's one for you, same idea. This sip bottle, carries 20 oz, and goes for about $4 on Amazon.

Double check that whatever you buy has a #5 Polypropylene on the bottom, and the bottles should be slightly squeezable.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Method kid shampoo leaves 'em clean and toxin free

Filed under: Kids and Parenting, Shopping Guide
I more conscious now of what soap and shampoo I keep around for the kids. I try to fight my <strike>cheap</strike> frugal ways and buy healthier options, even if it hurts. During my last trip to target I two small $9 bottles of baby shampoo and conditioner in my basket when I came across Method Kid Squeeky Green 3-in-1 Shampoo in Fuzzy Peach scent for the pleasing price of $6.99.

The shampoo, conditioner and body wash promised no "numbing agents," parabens, or phthalates. The solution looked like a winner so I threw it into my cart. I use quite a few Method products and it's a brand that I trust. I found all of the ingredients listed online and at the very least, the packaging was fun (I'm a sucker for packaging, what can I say?).

Method Kid shampoo was also a winner in practice. My two and a half year old just now has enough hair to require conditioner but fights every time water gets poured over her head so I like the fact that one bottle does double duty. The fact that it triples as a body wash is an added bonus.

I did find that the scent was a bit strong but remember, I had been using Dr. Bronner's unscented baby soap so any fragrance was going to throw me off. A more thorough rinsing was required than before but that's normal with any conditioner. This product also comes in Crisp Apple scent.

All in all, I am very pleased with this product due to its availability (I can't always make it to specialty shops to buy soap), list of ingredients, and friendly face.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Silikids, "Silicone must-haves for kids"

With all of the ruckus going on about plastics and baby and kid feeding gear, check out Silikids, "Silicone must-haves for kids."

Why silicone? According to Silikids, silicone is hygienic and hypoallergenic. It' a rubber-like material, but without the open pores. Silicone is easy to use and clean, and safe for your microwave, freezer and dishwasher, as well as your washer and dryer.

Check out the neat silicone sleeves for glass baby bottles shown to the right. Too cute! In addition, while we're talking bottles, silicone nipples are a better choice than latex nipples.

I love their silicone bibs too. The only products I'm not too sure are necessary are these silicone knee pads.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

KidCo BabySteps Food Mill

If you're thinking about taking the plunge into making your own baby food, here is a great gadget to make it super easy. The KidCo BabySteps Food Mill, powered by your very own hands, no batteries or electricity needed. It's also BPA and phthalate-free. A bargain at $9.99 on EKitchenGadgets.com.

If you do decide to make your own baby food, remember that, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the following foods should not be prepared at home for baby food: Beets, turnips, carrots, collard greens and spinach. In certain parts of the country, these vegetables can contain large amounts of nitrates. If you are serving these in purees, it's best to buy them from a commercial baby food manufacturer, as they regularly test their supplies for nitrates.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The Animal Planet Expo

Here's a fun, free activity for you and the kids to do this summer. The Animal Planet Expo, sponsored by Animal Planet. Not only is the Expo free, but your pets are also welcome to come!

Brent Hatch, Californian and father of five, figured out recently that he was spending $700 on gas every month for gas for the family minivan. Most people would just write this up to the annoyingly high cost of living, but Hatch decided instead to invent an eight-seat bicycle, made out of an ex-tourist vehicle, outfitted with solar panels and an electric motor. The paterfamilias can either use the electric power stored, or pedal like crazy, Flintstones-style, to get his brood around town.

Gallery: World's Weirdest Bikes

Drawbacks, besides the scorn of your adolescent children: This method obviously will not work for long-distance trips. It might be advisable to move to southern California or another sunny clime before investing. And, finally, I hope there are good bike lanes where Hatch lives, because otherwise I'd totally be scared to take kids out on the road in a bike, what with the crazy drivers out there...

Via Ecogeek

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

5 ways to reuse plastic bottle caps

Filed under: Home, Kids and Parenting, Tips
Throwing soda and water bottles into the recycling is easy enough. However, I always cringe when I have to toss the plastic cap into the trash. "There has to be a better way," I thought. Turns out there is. How Can I Recycle This had a multitude of suggestions. Here are my five favorites:

Fine art. Make a mosaic in concrete by submerging all but the very top of the cap into the wet cement. This method was created by a Honduran builder who was using bottles to construct houses.

Games. Create a game of memory by writing numbers or putting stickers on the underside of the caps.

Eco warrior. Gather a few caps together and drill two holes in each. Then, run a cord through the two holes of the cap in a way that they can still be screwed onto a bottle. Continue threading the caps onto a single cord until you have a necklace of sorts. Attach your creation to your backpack before you go out on the trail so that if you see any random bottle refuse, you can screw it on to dispose of later.

Ornament. Add some lace and ribbon to five bottle caps and you have a (somewhat tacky) Christmas ornament.

Whimsy. The only thing that I could come up with on my own was "drinking vessels for leprechauns." Not really practical but it could a fun activity with the kids or a sure way to make the neighbors think you are crazy.

What better way to learn about the environment, and Earth Day, than with a book?

Below, you'll find a gallery of books picked just in time for your kids, for Earth Day. You'll find everything from books about "Eco Babies" to books for preschoolers and books for teenagers. They released the survey recently to commemorate Earth Day.

So, how did we adults fare in the eyes of the future generation? 39% gave us an "F" on climate change (only 11% thought our response to the problem merited an "A"). Meanwhile, 54% of kids think that climate change is "the most important issue facing the world today." So we're not only failing - we're failing where it really counts! Poor showing.

Other results include the news that 52% of kids think that solar energy is the answer to the energy problem, and that we should start recycling more.

I just hope that these kids can hold onto their positive enviro-thoughts as they get older and older and realize that driving cars is the main way you can get places, and buying things is really fun...

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Canada makes a move to ban polycarbonate baby bottles

The Canadian government moved to ban a type of baby bottle on Friday, as it officially declared bisphenol-A, an ingredient in the bottles, toxic. This move is the first action taken by a government against bisphenol-A (BPA), a chemical that is a hormone disruptor. This action applies to only to polycarbonate plastic baby bottles. Polycarbonate bottles are hard, clear and have a #7 on the bottom. The ban will go into effect after a 60-day discussion period.

As far as the effect of this ban, it may not be much in the end, as most of Canada's retailers have already removed food-related products with BPA from their stores, including Shoppers Drug Mart.

As for the U.S., Charles Schumer, (D-NY), plans to introduce a bill that would ban BPA-related plastics for both adults and children, in food-related items.

For more about BPA, and infant bottles and kids' feeding gear, please see our GreenBaby feature.

Actually, it's one small child in particular that insists on peeling the wrappers of her crayons with her teeth before using them. From there, the condition of the crayon goes downhill and before long I am left with a small bucket full of tiny, broken, colored wax pieces. Here are five ways to reuse your toddler's rejected crayons:

Make a bigger crayon. Drop a few pieces of varying colors into a lined muffin tin. Bake at 250 degrees until crayons are melted to create multi-colored discs which foster new interest in old bits. If you don't want to use the oven, you can get good results setting the tins in the sun as well.

Seal. It may not be as stiff as the expensive wax from the stationer's but crayon wax will seal your letters just as well after melting a small amount with a lighter.

Paint. Mineral spirits or turpentine will dissolve crayons. Who knew? Make a drawing and then brush over it with a paintbrush dipped in mineral spirits for a water color effect.

Furniture repair. Keep various shades of blacks and browns around to color in the chips on your furniture. I use this one myself; colored pencils also work well.

You can either melt down the crayons and dip white crayons into the liquid or you can create new candles from scratch.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Plastic baby food containers, are they safe? I had concluded that they were safe, based on information from another (wonderful) site. Even though they were marked as a #7 plastic, which is a plastic that can have the hormone disruptor bisphenol-A in it, in this case, they were a combination of #1 and #2 plastic (considered relatively safe plastics). They had to carry the #7 label due to the fact they were a combo plastic, putting them in the "Other" category, #7.

Since then, a Green Daily reader, Trisha, alerted me to the fact that she called Gerber herself and the representative told her that the containers were made of #2 and #6 plastic, #6 plastic being one that you might want to avoid.

So I called Gerber myself and here is what the representative told me.

According to the Gerber representative, the packages are made of polyethylene, a #1 plastic, and polystyrene, a #6. He called it a "layered package," which makes it a #7 plastic, but assured me it's not made of polycarbonate, the plastic that is the subject of much concern lately, particularly involving baby bottles. I specifically asked if the containers were bisphenol-A free, and he said yes. This makes sense, considering that #6 does not contain bisphenol-A, however, other chemicals can leach out under certain conditions. I also asked if they were safe to microwave, and he said, yes, they are safe to microwave, as directed on the package. In a separate email correspondence, Gerber said that the polyethylene, the #1 plastic, is the layer on the inside of the package, and the polystyrene, which may have more issues, is on the outside.

As a recap, here's what I know about plastics:

Plastics with a #3, #6 and #7 label are the ones to avoid if you are concerned about plastic.

#2, #4, #5 are considered to be the safest plastics, if you need to use plastic for food at all.

#1 is the type of plastic that all of that bottled water comes in, and is not recommended to be reused.

So, here's the summary.

Gerber says it is safe to microwave in the packages, as directed, and that they do not contain bisphenol-A. Good news.

On microwaving, it is generally recognized that it is safer to microwave in ceramics or oven-safe glass over any plastic . You might want to do your own research on that, and on microwaving in plastics in general.

Keep in mind, these plastic baby food containers are generally not recyclable.

Other baby food manufacturers also offer food in plastic, and if you use those, you may want to do your own research on those also.

There are organic baby foods that come in glass jars, like Earth's Best. From what I have seen, Earth's Best is not more expensive per ounce than the major baby food manufacturers' organic offerings.

There are still offerings in glass jars from the major baby food manufacturers, both organic and conventional.

Glass baby food jars are recyclable and you might even be able to make some neat crafts out of them. Preschools in your area may even love a donation of them if you amass a collection!

And of course, you could always make your baby food from scratch. Here's a Green Daily article for some tips on that, including what baby foods you don't want to make yourself at home.

Whew! This is a great example of how each of us has to take responsibility for the products we buy, do the research ourselves, and make the choices that are best for us. Manufacturers usually have phone numbers on their packages, so if you have concerns or questions, pick up that phone!

How about one of these three new games based on the Planet Earth DVD series? The Planet Earth series, from the Discovery Channel, has sold over 1 million copies of the DVD series and is the most watched cable event of all time. I did not know that. Now back to these games.

The Planet Earth game features trivia based on the Planet Earth television series.

The SeaLife game will take players on a diving adventure with Jean-Michel Cousteau. Players collect sea creature cards by answering ocean-based trivia.
