Whatever the reason, instead of just throwing it in the trash, keep it around the house for some quick fixes and when the clear bottle is empty, recycle that bad boy.

Here are five ways that nail polish can save your life (or at least be re-purposed)!

Keys. Use nail polish to mark the keys on your key ring different colors so you can tell them apart in a jiffy.

Frayed ends. Every woman knows that nail polish will stop a run in her pantyhose, but did you know that it will end shoe lace fraying? Just dip the ends into a bottle of polish and allow to dry.

Carpentry. Painting nail polish on the threads of a screw before inserting will provide you with a tight finish.

Wart remover. I won't vouch for whether this is a good idea for your health, but supposedly painting nail polish over a wart will cause it to go away in a week's time.

Fill. Nail polish can be used to fill in small chips or cracks in ceramics, wood floors and plastics. However, for holes in your walls, reach for the toothpaste.

In the wake of news that the actress is getting hitched to her long-time boyfriend McCartney recently told reporters that she'll be making the wedding dress.

However, Scarlett doesn't know that yet.

OK, I'm sure Stella's statements were taken out of context, so it's probably not nearly as creepy as it sounds -- and, in fact, it's fairly common for designers to create clothing specifically for famous people who may or may not wear it. However, McCartney did joke that she wanted to make the gown out of "Latex. Latex for Scarlett!" So...um.

In any case, Stella has wedding experience (she made Madonna's presumably eco-friendly bridal outfit when the singer married Guy Ritchie back in 2000), so if Scarlett does decide to take her up on the offer, it wouldn't be a bad idea. Plus, who wouldn't want a gown that's good for the planet?

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Mad Imports: socially conscious fashion from Madagascar and Kenya

Now this is what I'm talking about! Mad Imports is eco-fashion at it's finest!
Looking for a practical fashion statement that'll give you cred whether you're in the boardroom or at the latest Al Gore award gala? The UR 202 watch from Urwerk is not only one cool-looking gadget, but it uses compressed air from wind turbines to help keep itself wound. It's as if James Bond and David Suzuki got together and had a child, only for some reason it was a watch.

The mechanism by which the watch works is described in incomprehensible detail on the Urwerk site, but as far as I can tell the it uses a relatively standard self-winding system, with the mini wind turbines serving to keep the watch from overwinding. While that's not going save the world a whack of kilowatts, it's nice to see this kind of technology being incorporated on such a small scale in consumer items.

No indication of price, but it's made in Switzerland by two guys in black turtlenecks so be prepared to cash in the kids' college funds. That said, if the UR202 is something you can't live without, there's a list of retailers on the site.

That's what makes the jewelry so unique.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Molly M. Instead of burning that topaz necklace, tossing it in the trash can or hurling it onto the highway, make some money off that sucker (the necklace, not the ex) and help the environment in the process.

You can hawk everything from bracelets to earrings, but my favorite is the "Gifts that should have been jewelry" category, filled with bags, wallets, perfume, and even a few wedding dresses from some bitter sisters whose beaus ditched them before they could don the virginal white gowns.

The end result? Fellow bitter sistah gets rid of her burdensome reminder of a failed relationship, and you get a gently-used piece of bling. Citing an inability to raise funds for the next quarter, Portland-based eco-fashion company Nau is calling it quits after only 14 months. Founded by ex-Nike and ex-Patagonia executives, Nau's mission was to blend fashion, environmentalism, and social activism into an experimental business model -- donating 5% of all sales to non-profits.

The tragic part of Nau's plight is that the operations side of their business model was actually working -- it was their timing that proved to be their undoing. After turning out high quality sustainable products, stronger than expected sales, and donating $223,000 to non-profits through their customer-directed Partners for Change program, the drying up of venture capital has driven Nau to the breaking point. Bummer. Their unique way of doing business has definitely left its mark in the world of green business. Right now, they're entire inventory is 50% off.

[via Treehugger]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Solar powered leather satchel

Filed under: Fashion, Gadgets and Tech
We've seen our share of compact solar chargers, and while they might deliver an off-the-grid charge for you portable devices, they usually fall well short of making a desirable fashion statement. That's why it's refreshing to see a designer that takes style as seriously as it takes sustainability. Noon Solar, an eco-minded baggage company, has come up with a fashionable line of handbags equipped with flexible solar panels to charge your phone or iPod.

This satchel looks like it's built to last -- like something Indiana Jones might outfit himself with. While the full-grain cowhide leather might not make these bags the popular with vegans, Noon Solar claims that their leather is less detrimental to the environment than vinyl alternatives. NS also uses naturally dyed and sustainably-harvested cotton and hemp to finish out their eco-chic, one of a kind pieces.

[via Engadget]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Anna Cohen: Eco-friendly high fashion

For true fashionistas who care about the environment, Anna Cohen is the designer for you. She's worked for big names in the fashion industry like Guess, Binicocchi, Max Mara and Patrizia Pepe while living in Italy, but eventually she came back to the U.S. where she started her own line of eco-friendly high fashion.

Anna's talks a little about her personal philosophy saying, "It is our conscious choices every day that affect the resources on which all life depends. We must make this transition into personal responsibility a beautiful empowering process."

Gallery: Anna Cohen

She puts that philosophy into practice, merging Italian style and sustainability. Anna wants to remain on the forefront of social and environmental responsibility, all while "creating cutting edge fashion apparel."

While it's not easy to do that in an industry that doesn't seem to care very much about their effect on the world around them, Anna has managed to flourish.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Loyale: Organic luxury clothing

Loyale characterizes itself as "organic luxury." After pulling last year's models out of your closet, you might be tempted to buy a fresh pair. Before you do so, check out these five ways to reuse (or renew!) your old flip-flops.

Fashion forward. An old pair of flip flops can be revived by a hot glue gun and items that you have lying around the house. Glue accessories onto your footwear for an updated look. Nifty additions include silk flowers, shells and buttons.

Set sail. If your flip-flops are no longer wearable, you can remove the straps, fill the hole with a slightly larger dowel and add a sail. Make two and you can have a race.

Landscape. With enough flip-flops, you could cut them into small cubes and use them as spongy surface material under playground equipment.

You've seen the initials all of your life, but you probably didn't take much notice. The Tokyo-based company is by far the largest manufacturer of the classically under-appreciated fastener that we call the zipper. And fortunately, YKK's company philosophy is based around "the cycle of goodness" -- a belief that good things come to those who do good.

That's partly why they've taken it upon themselves to make the world's billions of zippers more eco-friendly. By offering a zipper made from recycled PET plastic called the Natulon, and a biodegradable zipper called the ReEarth, YKK claims to be the first zipper company to go green. Zippers may not be a the greatest threat to the planet, but as YKK says on its website: "Little Parts. Big Difference." Every little bit adds up. Hopefully, eco-friendly clothing designers will catch on and help spark demand for eco-zippers.

[via Treehugger]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

iWood eco-friendly sunglasses

Now that summer is upon us, you're probably in the market for a new pair of sunglasses.
Hudson's Bay Company, the storied Canadian retailer (now owned by a US company), has announced that the design for the Canadian team uniforms will be ultra-eco this year. Apart from the usual stretchy breathability associated with athletic clothes, the apparel will be made from natural, renewable materials like bamboo and organic cotton. Nothing like the comfort of a pair of bamboo pants, eh?

In what looks like a nod to Beijing's notorious smog, the outfits will also include a polyester item called a b-tube, which can work as hair cover, head band or face mask.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Beat bike-butt with Greenknickers

Filed under: Cars and Transportation, Fashion, Fitness
As far as I'm concerned bicycle commuting is the healthiest and most eco-friendly way to cut down on short car trips -- plus it's a load of fun. The number of people clamoring for a car free lifestyle makes this an exciting time for the future of commuting on two wheels. There's just one problem: the more you ride the better your chances of developing 'bike-butt,' aka a severely sore backside.

Well, ladies -- and men who wear ladies underwear -- now you can beat BB with a pair of convertible undies from GreenKnickers. Instead of just expressing your love for eating organic with your unmentionables, the folks at GreenKnickers have developed panties and boxers that include a removable butt protector. These undergarments are made from a blend of 70% sustainable bamboo and 30% organic cotton and they come with a pad that I'm assuming velcros on for your ride -- then you can take it right back off for a comfortable workday. By the way, they actually do offer some bike boxers for men.

[via Treehugger]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Nude Deal: Good for the Earth?

Michelle Higgins writes in Saturday's New York Times about the recent trend of resorts and vacation homes catering to those who prefer the bare necessities when they travel: vacations in the nude.

Nudists, who also call themselves naturalists, cite all kinds of reasons for shedding their layers: simplicity, reducing consumerism, and avoiding the race to the trendiest, most expensive, most recent fashion. You might say they are putting on air -- instead of airs.

You might also remember reading about the German travel agency that is planning an all-nude flight for to a popular nudist beach, Usedom, in July. Americans spend several thousand dollars per year, per person, on clothing. When we finally get around to doing that much-needed spring cleaning, sometimes we take clothes to Goodwill--but sometimes we just chuck them in the garbage because they're too dirty, too torn up, or we're just too lazy.

That has more of an environmental impact than you might think. The EPA Office of Solid Waste reports that individual Americans throw away upwards of 60 pounds of clothes and fabrics each year (read more about the environmental impact of clothing waste here). Well, what if you didn't wear clothes--thus, they didn't wear out? You'd save yourself money, and, potentially, your local dump a few layers of old tees and jeans.

So, here's the question: Would you take off your clothes for the planet?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
