You already know Edward Norton is a darn cool guy. After all, who else could have made "The Hulk" even greener? But now, he's doing more than just speaking out. He's even going beyond putting his money where his mouth is. Norton is running a marathon!

Though he might have occasional super powers on-screen, it turns out that, when it comes to running, he's just like everybody else and is experiencing common running ailments. But there's no way he'll quit -- he's running for a cause.

Norton is running the New York Marathon to benefit Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust, an organization that seeks to protect the ecosystem in the area with which he became acquainted with 10 years ago on a trip to Kenya. His 30-person team is an eclectic mix of celebrities (Alanis Morrisette, David Blaine) and Maasai warriors (some of whom are still deciding whether to run in shoes or sandals.

Plenty of us like getting our fruit fixes through juice -- it's portable, tasty, and often less messy than eating a piece of fruit. But are you sure you're really getting fruit in your juice, or are there a bunch of added, artificial flavors? And what about the packaging -- is your juice killing the planet?

Naked Juice makes it simple for eco-warriors to get their juice on, naturally. They start with real fruit that is sustainably sourced (all bananas are Rainforest Alliance Certified, and all the fruit and veggie blends are non-GMO, or non-genetically modified organisms). They also work with suppliers to make sure they're ethical both socially and environmentally.

The creation of the juice is sustainbly done, too. Naked Juice's packaging is recyclable, as is most of their suppliers' packaging, and they're constantly working to improve their waste and energy reduction at every stage of the game. All products are transported on recyclable plastic pallets (durable and lighter than wood), reducing fuel used for transport and saving trees.
Continue reading Naked: It's Good for the Planet (and You)!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

EcoUsable - Filtered Water, Wherever You Go

Filed under: Food, Gadgets and Tech

I do my best to avoid drinking bottled water, but every once in a while, I find myself someplace where the tap water just tastes (or smells, or looks) bad. But I have a solution now -- EcoUsable Ech20 filtered water bottles.

The stainless steel bottles aren't just BPA-free -- they also have a personal filtration system, so you can take icky, gross water and turn it into clean, tasty agua in seconds (seriously, I took part in a demo of this at Surf Expo and the water went from brown to crystal clear, and tasted great).

They offer multiple sizes and colors, and are priced reasonably -- the 18 oz. filtered water bottles are $34.99, and the 25 oz. version is $39.99. Replacement filters are offered on the site as well, for $24.99. Or perhaps your favorite memories of him are from the amazing fight scenes in "Road House." We all have our favorite Swayze moments, and it's with a heavy heart that we say good-bye to the screen icon and one-time "Sexiest Man Alive".

Not only did he have a major impact on cinema, but he was a conservationist as well. While filming "King Solomon's Mines" in South Africa, he was moved by the people and animals in the African bush.

"Out of this experience was born an idea for a global conservation documentary series that is turning huge," Swayze told the LA Times in 2004. Recently, Tropicana invited me, along with a number of other bloggers, to their Chicago headquarters to learn about their efforts toward sustainability. I was skeptical. Tropicana is a huge corporation -- they're part of Pepsico, after all, and I just hadn't heard all that much about their efforts to help the planet.

Let me just say I was pleasantly surprised by what I learned.

For starters, they do their best to keep things local. Out of every 10 oranges harvested, 9.5 come from Florida. The other half an orange comes from Brazil, which is a necessity in case Florida has a bad hurricane season or loses too many orange trees to frost. For example, in 2004, Florida was down 250 million trees after the hurricanes and a bout of citrus canker.
Continue reading What is Your OJ Doing for the Planet?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Make Your Bathroom More Eco-Friendly

How To Make Your Bathroom Eco-Friendly on Howcast

I don't know anybody who actively dislikes the farmers' market. However, I do know plenty of folks who don't take full advantage of markets near them. Are you one of them?

Don't be! This time of year is perfect for stocking up on fresh fruits and vegetables. In-season produce is often more affordable than you think.

Think back to your school days -- what foods filled your tray? Reheated tator tots, square slices of greasy pizza, and unidentifiable meat all come to mind ... which is probably why I brown bagged it almost every day of high school.

Unfortunately, in many areas, those highly processed foods still make up the bulk of school lunches. In the schools she's worked in, she's introduced real chicken, whole grains, and fresh produce to the noontime meal.
Continue reading Ann Cooper - Making Processed School Lunches a Thing of the Past

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Our New Green Toolbar - Dowload it Now!

Designer Stella McCartney might not have been in attendance, but she was there in spirit as Hollywood's environmentally elite showed up at her L.A. boutique for a screening of the eco-documentary "Home." Stars like Cameron Diaz, Emily Deschanel, Anjelica Huston, Rosanna Arquette, Liv Tyler and Rosario Dawson all showed up for the premiere, and were full of praise for the designer as well as tips for eco-friendly living.

According to WWD, Diaz said, "I love that she walks the line. She shows you can have high fashion without having to compromise your ethics," while Arquette added, "She's a great lady, and comes from a great family."

Treehugger had more scoop on the celebs who strutted the <strike>red</strike> green carpet. Deschanel, who is a vegan, used the event as an opportunity to speak out about global warming, saying, "Reusing is as important as recycling. Don't forget to bring your own bag when shopping. Keep one in the car. Buy natural products. I'm picking up an amazing belt of Stella's that I bought. It's non-leather. The tanning process is terrible for the environment.
Local businesses need our support, but it can feel overwhelming. There are so many, and if you're like me, you only have so much to spend. Should you blow your budget in one favorite store? Or make a tiny purchase in all of them?

The 3/50 Project breaks it down and makes it easy. The premise is that you choose three independently-owned local businesses that you would truly miss if they were no longer around. Then, shop there. Step one, check!

Each month, aim to spend $50 in these three businesses (and you can choose three new ones each month, if you like). From the 3/50 Project website: "If half the employed population spent $50 each month in locally owned independent businesses, it would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue." That's a major impact considering you're not being asked to spend all that much!

You're a conscientious shopper, and you pay attention to the green and ethical practices behind the businesses that get your money -- good for you! Now, apparently, you should be getting your booty over to Kohl's, which just came in as the number one purchaser of green power among retailers, and third overall.

EPA Green Power Partners that have completed voluntary green power purchases were ranked. Sure, it's great to unplug and turn off your computer to save energy, but some folks (like yours truly) just can't do that -- our jobs sort of require our computers to be on. Still, there's an easy way for you to make your computer use a little greener.

GreenDaily's new Green Toolbar is here, it's awesome, and it's available to download. Ideally, to celebrate Earth Day, I'd have my computer turned off and unplugged. However, like many of you, that's just not a possibility -- my job sort of calls for a computer to be used all day, every day, you know? But there is something really simple you and I can do to green our machines.

AOL's new Green Toolbar is here, it's awesome, and it's available to download. Okay, ecophiles, I know you're gearing up for Earth Day this Wednesday, and rightfully so -- it's an awesome holiday. However, in all of the Earth Day hubbub (bike to work! eat locally! turn off extra lights!), something really important often gets overlooked -- Arbor Day, which falls on Friday of this week.

While Earth Day is relatively new (the first official Earth Day took place in 1970), Arbor Day has been around forever, and therefore, might seem a little less exciting. But if you ask me, the huge amount of history behind the holiday is a big part of its appeal.

The first Arbor Day took place in 1872, in Nebraska City, and it's estimated that more than a million trees were planted on that day. And hey, if they could plant a million trees more than 135 years ago, don't you think we can do a heck of a lot better now?

The Arbor Day Foundation has links to all kinds of Arbor Day events -- just click on your state to see if any tree-planting organizations are sponsoring some nice, dirty fun in your neck of the woods. However, even if your community doesn't have anything planned, you can still celebrate. Plant a tree on your own (find out what kind to plant here), give a tree to someone you love, or organize your own volunteer tree planting event!

Arbor Day and Earth Day really go hand in hand, so use this week to show your appreciation for whatever kinds of trees you have in your neighborhood, even if you can't get around to it until the weekend. Hey, as long as you take action at some point, it really is the thought that counts!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Animal Lovers, Take Note - Paw Nation is Live!

Here at GreenDaily, we sure love animals.
