Eco-Beat, 1/5

Why is Emile Hirsch climbing a mountain with Jessica Biel? Why is Overstock.com no longer the place to buy ostrich skin boots? Is a bean-rich diet worse for the planet than a beef-rich diet? Today's Eco-Beat has the scoop on all the latest green news and tips.

Emile will take JT's place and join Jessica Biel, Lupe Fiasco, Kenna and Elizabeth Gore on a 50-mile hike to the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro in order to raise money for clean water in the developing world. Can't make the hike? You can still sponsor a foot of the climb.

Thinking about hitting up LA's premiere green living expo later this month? Ed Begley Jr. (one of my favorite eco celebs) and Mariel Hemingway are among the LA Go Green Expo's featured speakers. The show runs from Jan. 22-24, and business buyers get in free on Friday.

Yesterday, Overstock dropped all listings that include leather from "exotic animals." From here on out, you'll no longer be able to find products that contain ostrich, shark, alligator, kangaroo, eel, or lizard skin. I'm not sure I understand exactly why; are ostriches endangered?

In her latest role, Cate stars along side her husband Andrew Upton in a real life quest to make the Sydney Theatre Company the greenest in the business. They've announced plans to put a 500MW solar array (the largest rooftop array in Australia) on the theater.

Imagine this scenario: Billions of people across the world go vegetarian and increase their consumption of indigestible carbs (particularly beans) and it offset the atmospheric benefits by substantially increasing their lifecycle fart emissions. Sure, it's ridiculous, but funny.
