America Recycles Day!

On the other hand, having spent some time lately visiting my sister in North Carolina where they don't have curbside recycling (my San Francisco "we made composting the law" sensibilities continue reel!) I can definitely see the need to raise awareness in parts of our great country. People don't recycle, and they need Recycling 101!
This is the 12th year of ARD, a day dedicated to educating yourself about recycling, and making the choice of buying recycled products. You know you look at that empty orange juice carton every single time and think, "Wait, is this trash, or recycling, or maybe compost?" -- this is the day you actually sit down at your computer and find the answer!
The ARD site has great facts to motivate you, and resources for events and actions you can take. I really like the pledge:
- I pledge to find out what materials I can and cannot recycle in my community.
- I pledge to lead by example in my neighborhood by recycling.
- I pledge to recycle batteries, cell phones and other electronic waste, and find an e-waste facility near me.
- I pledge to email my elected officials to ask them to increase funding for my community's recycling programs.
- I pledge to tell five friends that recycling is the easiest thing they can do to slow global warming.
In case you need a little more motivation, here are two facts about recycling that jumped out at me: it creates jobs, and it conserves resources for the future of everyone's children.
Bring out the blue bins, right? Check out the site to find events in your area!
Happy ARD!
