For snowboarders and skiers, the impact of global warming is hitting home: shorter seasons, melting glaciers, rising snow levels, ski resorts shutting down for good.
Eight-time Big Mountain Snowboarder of the Year Jeremy Jones founded Protect Our Winters in 2007, after personally witnessing the impact of global warming on repeat trips to the Alaskan wilderness. With the threat of climate change as a rallying point, Protect Our Winters taps the collective passion of skiers and snowboarders, creates global warming awareness and rallies action within the snowsports community and industry to fight shrinking winters.
The 2009/10 winter season marks Protect Our Winters third year in operation. To date the non-profit has funded the installation of solar panels at schools in Utah, Wyoming and Vermont, via a grant to Solar 4R Schools; funded the creation of a grades school global warming education curriculum, via a grant to the Wolf Ridge Environmental Center; funded Center for Snow and Avalanche Studies snowmelt and global warming research, among many other POW grant-funded projects. Protect Our Winters sponsored the human-powered backcountry snowboarding film “My Own Two Feet” and the “Generations” short film on global warming’s impact on skiers and snowboarders; instituted a carbon-offset program specifically for skiers snowboarders; partnered with snowsports industry leaders on sustainable product initiatives, and established a cohesive connection point for grassroots and industry-scale climate change action in the spowsports community.
For 2010, Protect Our Winters intends to issue a grant each month. Additional Solar 4R School installations, full classroom implementation of the grade school global warming curriculum, further snow melt research, further co-branded POW green products, and an international Protect-Our-Winters- sponsored “Snow Day” of climate change awareness and action are all in the process of being funded by POW members and corporate sponsors.
Lead by Jones, Protect Our Winters Our channels the passion and dynamism of snowsports culture towards long-lasting action in the fight to reverse climate change and reclaim the winter environment from the threats of global warming. As the December 2009 Copenhagen Climate Change Summit approaches, the Protect Our Winters platform will be a leading advocate for renewable power and progressive environmental education, and an beacon of awareness to all participants in the winter sports world.

Well ... this is a difficult statement to swallow:

"Surfers are one of the greenest and most environmentally-active groups of athletes."

This is both true and, well, absolutely false.

For the local surfer, who loves to walk / such to their beach and goes to the same (nearby) beaches, time after time -- often true.

On the other hand, how many surfers fly around the world chasing waves? There are those who are ready to hop on a flight from California to Hawaii to hit a good set of waves for a few days, making that flight multiple times / year.

That sort of travel mania isn't very green.
