Is Flying Standby Greener?
We may all be flying a little less in these financially tight times, but we also may be looking for cheaper ways to fly when we have to get somewhere far away. In my case, buddy passes from friends who work for airlines have allowed me to travel more than I could have otherwise.I was talking to one of those friends recently, who said that when she calculated her carbon footprint, she didn't count her standby flights: the planes would fly anyway, she said, and plus, it would make her carbon footprint huge.
If I took my standby flights out of by carbon footprint calculation, my footprint would go down several thousand pounds of C02. What do you think? Is flying standby greener?
It looks like a few people have already considered the issue. This blogger has an amusing but somewhat accurate take on the issue. Here's another resource that compares flying to driving in a number of different situations from About.com.
If you can't answer this question, or if you have to fly anyway, check out the Stockholm Environmental Institute's "Flying Green" Handout. They tell you both greener ways to travel and the best way to pick a carbon offset company if you decide to compensate that way for your air travel.
