Can't Sleep? Try These Natural Cures
If you have trouble sleeping you might be tempted to reach for the medicine cabinet or even fall asleep in front of the television. Neither solution will give you the restorative type of sleep that you need in order to be at the top of your game. Sleep aids can become addictive and television can actually cause insomnia (not to mention waste energy if left on all night long). Here are a few natural sleep tips to help you along:
- Start with the bedroom. Keep your work, toys and any other distractions out of the bedroom. Make sure that you can shut out most of the light with heavy blinds to combat early morning awakenings. Finally, how's your bed? An uncomfortable mattress could be robbing you of your sleep. You may even want to invest in an organic mattress to avoid off-gassing of volatile organic compounds.
- Routines help. Exercising during the day and staying away from caffeine and sugary snacks before bed are obvious solutions. However, you may want to indulge yourself with some aromatherapy at bedtime. Take a bath in lavender oil or use peppermint for a soothing foot bath. You can even use an oil diffuser to give your room a pleasing scent that you associate with relaxation.
- Use herbs to get drowsy. Make an herb pillow with a relaxing scent or drink some chamomile tea. A hot compress on the forehead scented with lavandar might also do the trick.
- Your daytime diet can help as well. Make sure that you are getting plenty of foods rich in vitamin B (green vegetables, nuts, eggs and dairy). Choose slow burning carbs like oats, rice andbeans. Finally, if you must have a drink before bedtime choose the time favored glass of warmed milk or even mulled cider.
