Jay Leno Test Drives the MINI E

While most of the tire-squealing gas hogs that reside in Jay Leno's garage are anything but eco-friendly, Jay likes to keep his eye on emerging eco-friendly technologies. Case in point: Leno's turbine measuring contest with Ed Begely Jr. This week at the Garage, Leno got to take an extensive lookie loo at the new MINI E, BMW's first micro-sized foray into the world of mass produced electric drive technology.

Though his passion may be hogs and hotrods, Jay is no stranger to the ways of electric propulsion -- he's been behind the wheel of a wide array of EVs from the 1909 Baker Electric to the Tesla Roadster, and now the 2009 MINI E. A quick rundown of the electric Mini's highlights would include: a 2.5hr recharge time, range of 100-120 miles, and a top speed of 95mph. Unfortunately, BMW will be leasing only 450 MINI Es in the US this year, and distribution is limited to California, New York, and New Jersey. Leases are $850/month and last one year only.
