Would You Pay Extra to Recycle?

More than three years post Katrina and there is still no city run recycling program in New Orleans. Before the storm, residents paid an additional three dollars a month to their garbage bill for weekly curbside recycling. Now the only option is to hire a private firm for five or six times the amount.

Due to citizen demand, two private recycling companies have sprung up. Each service offers curbside recycling of all plastics, paper and cans but no glass for $15 to $18 a month (one even requires a three-year contract). Instead of weekly pickup, the companies pass by only twice a month. There are no plans for the city to resume recycling.

What would you do? Are you so committed to recycling that you would pay the extra $15 per month? Would you pay an extra $60 per year for a service that you technically already pay for when you put your garbage bins out to the curb? I would see if there is a drop off recycling center nearby. When I was a kid we'd drive to one of these centers ever other month to drop off recycling because curbside was not available.

If there is no recycling center I'd probably pay the money, but might as a neighbor if they want to share.

I think its a shame that there is not enough money made by the recycler for them to to do it without having to charge me for the service. In the business i retired from we accepted the product we sold from our customers and non customers at no charge to them and sent it to the manufactorer and were not charged by them for returns. They supplied the containers and paid the shipping charges.

Ralph, normally there is enough money made from recyclables but their value has declined rapidly as of late with only slight recovery. Where I live recyclables have to be transported 90 miles away to the nearest center which adds to the cost. But yes, it is a shame.
