Would You Pay Extra to Recycle?

More than three years post Katrina and there is still no city run recycling program in New Orleans. Before the storm, residents paid an additional three dollars a month to their garbage bill for weekly curbside recycling. Now the only option is to hire a private firm for five or six times the amount.

Due to citizen demand, two private recycling companies have sprung up. Each service offers curbside recycling of all plastics, paper and cans but no glass for $15 to $18 a month (one even requires a three-year contract). Instead of weekly pickup, the companies pass by only twice a month. There are no plans for the city to resume recycling.

What would you do? Are you so committed to recycling that you would pay the extra $15 per month? Would you pay an extra $60 per year for a service that you technically already pay for when you put your garbage bins out to the curb? Let me know in the comments and than I'll share what I chose to do.
