Snuggie - Why All the Hate?

Snuggie, the blanket with sleeves, is quite the punching bag these days. The NY Times asked if it's appropriate to wear one in public (uh, no, it's a blanket.). Bill Maher wore one last week on his show Real Time, and it wasn't to make a favorable point.

But is the Snuggie really such a bad idea? Where I live, we are coming off a rough winter. Man, it was (is) cold. And you know you're supposed to keep your thermostat low now and all that, but sometimes it didn't even matter because my furnace couldn't even keep up anyway. Maybe the Snuggie could help. So what if it's a blanket with sleeves? Does a person look any sillier shuffling around in a blanket with sleeves than wearing a blanket like a cape?

Would I have worn a Snuggie, had I had one this winter? The answer is probably yes. But I wouldn't have told a soul.

IT'S A BACKWARDS ROBE! Thus the mockery. Plus inescapable, stupid commercials and the fact that people have been doing just fine with blankets forever. Wouldn't the green thing be to use those blankets that also work on a bed rather than to buy a new consumer item that's really only used while in front of a TV?

Actually, I own a Snuggie. While it seems pretty lame, it doesn't get bunched up under me when I shift in my recliner. I can also reach for my beverage on the coffee table without the heat escaping from the blanket when I take my arms out. I stay very warm when I use it and I've barely had to turn the heat up since I got mine! So all you Snuggie haters out there, stop being jealous that my Snuggie is more convenient than your blanket! If you're so worried about being green, figure this: the snuggie is large enough for my 6'3" roommate to nap under after a hard day of work. I don't see the difference between buying one of those or a blanket.

I actually have been thinking about making one of these for quite some time. I wouldn't have sleeves with it, so mine would be more of a poncho. A poncho with the sides sewn tight...
