Massachusetts Governor Proposes $2 Carbon Fee for Airport Parking
As if we needed more reasons to avoid picking friends up from the airport, loyal and reliable friends in Boston may soon have one more reason to stray. On top of the $1 across-the-board parking rate hike at Logan International Airport, Governor Deval Patrick is asking legislators to tack on another $2 carbon fee. That means a 20-30 minute trip to Logan International to pickup a relative is going to cost $6 in parking fees alone. In my interpretation, giving drivers of an obligatory friend-taxi one more reason to cop out is probably the greatest benefit that the proposal has to offer. Aside from that, the proposal appears to be a thinly veiled attempt to price individual drivers out of the airport pickup business. The Governor has made it clear that he intends to encourage more travelers to use public transportation, and environmental groups are latching on to the governor's subtly anti-car message. What do you think? Is this a money grab by a cash-strapped state? Or is the Governor's heart in the right place?
