Compost With Wooden Pallets

If you've got some wooden shipping pallets left over after building your garden table and your tiny house, why not make a compost bin?

There are some simple compost bin building plans available and all you will need is four to five pallets and some screws. And by simple, I mean, your 8-year-old can do this if she can use a drill.

So far we've only used pallets to stack things on but it seems like there are many more uses. I am really considering building one of those garden tables from pallets. What have you done with pallets? Do you see them as a nuisance or a goldmine of building materials?

I'd skip using screws to hold together pallets together for a compost bin: You'll need to regularly pull one pallet out to turn the compost. Constantly inserting and removing screws will tear up the wood.

I re-purposed some old electrical wire to tie the corners of 4 pallets together to form my compost bin. It's easy to undo whichever corner is easiest to get to when the time comes to turn the pile.

More than half of these pallets are used just once and then discarded, ending up in landfills. We can skip the wood all together and go with a recycled corrugated pallet like GreenLight Pallet's 100% recyclable, 100% environmentally green and keep em' out of the landfills for once and for all..
