How to Felt a Sweater for Crafting

sweaterSo, I've certainly pointed you in the direction of many projects involving felted wool sweaters of your own or from the thrift store. What I failed to notice was that some of you may not actually have experience felting sweaters. So, some tips along with the nice tutorial on how to felt sweaters from Crafting a Green World.
  • Don't try felting something in with your other laundry. The sweater, not used to being in hot water, could impart it's color onto your other clothes. The process won't work as well with other items in the wash with the wool either.
  • High efficiency washers sometimes take more effort to get things felted. I have one and it never does quite as well as an older washer which has a lot more agitation going on. So, if you know someone with an older washer, you might work on your felting there so it takes fewer tries to get things just right.
  • You do have to cut things apart to get them to felt really well. I tried to skip that step and ended up with a sweater that wasn't a whole lot different than when it went into the washer.
Have you tried felting yet? What are you using your wool felt for?
