Gardening Inspires Recycling
I am admittedly new to this whole gardening thing. I have a track record of jumping in headfirst with many of my projects and gardening is no exception. As I was rinsing out a used yogurt container last night, I got to thinking about how many more items I was reusing lately rather then dropping them in the recycling bin. In fact, a lot of fancy gardening equipment can be avoided if you just reuse what you are already throwing away. Here are a few observations. Please feel free to add your own!
- Just about anything can be used to grow seedlings for transplants including egg cartons, yogurt containers, milk cartons and even gallon milk jugs sawed in half. Just poke a few holes in the bottom and you are done.
- Old t-shirts, nylons and even socks can be cut into strips for tying tomatoes to stakes.
- Soiled clothes and dish water can be reused for landscape plants.
- Bed sheets can be hauled outside to cover a garden when a frost is expected.
- Store unused seeds in pickle jars (or any wide mouth jar) in the back of the refrigerator.
- Cut plastic milk jugs into strips and use as plant markers.
- Food scraps, paper products, dryer lint and even cotton clothes can be composted.
- Trash cans can be turned into composters.
