The Evil Starbucks Non-Recyclable Cup Issue

starbucks cupEver since I read on Super Eco that Starbucks cups are not recyclable, I've been on a mission to drive everyone around me crazy by talking about.

Well, that's more of a fringe benefit. My real mission is get Starbucks to do something about it and stop being such a big greenwasher.

Here's the deal. Those hot to-go cups have a plastic lining in them. So you can't recycle them. Period.

Sure, they're made of 10% post-consumer waste, but customers go through over 2 billion -- that's BILLION with a "B" for bad -- cups a year. And the only place to put all of those cups? In landfill.

Even Starbucks admits that this is a problem, and they have a goal of getting fully recyclable cups in all stores by 2015.

I think their reaction is lame for two reasons:

  1. Competitor Peet's already put compostable cups in their stores - in 2007
  2. Saying it will take six years to R&D something that already exists is the same as saying "Starbucks doesn't care about recycling"

Starbucks could move much faster, if they thought it was important, i.e. if they thought anyone cared.

I bet there are lots of people who are just as shocked and irritated as I am that Starbucks is dragging their behinds on this one. So I started a movement over at The Point to get all of our voices in one place, to make it easier for Starbucks to hear us.

It's called Starbucks Eco-Cup Switch in 2009. As soon as we get 1,000 people to join, we're all going to post on the Starbucks feedback site on the same day, demanding an environmentally friendly cup.

Hey, if we're still willing pay $4 for for a soy latte, don't they owe us an eco-friendly cup?

(PS, yes, it's better to bring your own cup. And if I could figure out how to make people do that instead, I would totally spend all of my energy on that.)
