Whalers and Sea Shepherds Collide in Shipwreck

the Sea Shepherds ship, the Steve IrwinOK, so it really wasn't so much of a shipwreck -- it was more of a fender bender at sea -- but whatever. Sometime on Friday, at a location somewhere in the Southern Ocean, the Sea Shepherds accidentally rammed collided with a Japanese whaling ship -- resulting in an all-out whale blubber pelting of the Shepherds by the Japanese crew. Ah, nice to know civility is alive and well in the world today.

The incident reportedly marked the boiling point for rising antagonism that had built throughout the week. Hostilities apparently came to a head when Japanese whalers were attempting to transfer a whale from the harpooning ship to the Maru 1. At that point, Watson and co, attempted to use the Steve Irwin block the transfer.

As it goes with most of these whale tales, it's pretty unclear what happened next, except that the Steve Irwin somehow rammed into the back of the harpooning ship. The Japanese were pretty PO'd about it, and let the Shepherds know by chunking bloody whale meat and blubber at the activists. According to Watson:
We were in the process of blocking the transfer from the Yushin Maru 2 when the Yushin Maru 1 moved directly in front of the bow to block us... I could not turn to starboard without hitting the Yushin Maru 1. I tried to back down but the movement of the Yushin Maru 2 made the collision unavoidable,"
Of course, the Japanese are calling this a deliberate ramming, saying that "it is an act of violence and it is unforgivable." For me, I doubt that Watson deliberately crashed into the Maru 2. Suffice to say, when you antagonize a whaling ship, pelt its crew with rancid butter and attempt to block their movements -- things like this are bound to happen.
