Micro Wind Craze Begins Death Spiral in the UK
Just as fast as the micro wind phenomenon swept across the UK, it appears that the fascination with microgeneration is riding a bullet train out of Trendytown. Only a couple of years ago, home improvement stores like B&Q announced that they would be equipping customers with the tools necessary to single-handedly kickstart the renewable energy revolution for a price of only £1,500. Now, after a slew of negative press, B&Q has quietly pulled their off-the-shelf micro wind turbines. From the article: The retreat from microgeneration isn't a huge surprise. Micro wind in urban areas is now generally regarded by homeowners and the Carbon Trust as unsuitable for many locations, with the Trust suggesting some turbines will actually consume more CO2 through their production than they save through energy generation.I think most people reading this blog can sympathize at one level or another -- wouldn't it be amazing to offset a significant hunk of your energy consumption with a bolt-on contraption that costs $2,100? Unfortunately, it appears that a majority of wind enthusiasts and their good intentions have been taken for a ride by the microgeneration industry -- if not intentionally. Apparently, even store-bought solar panels are hurting as people search for safer green home investments.
