I had a few issues with my Neti pot at first too. I didn't tilt my head down enough and it would go down my throat - ow! I also had to really work to get the right amount of salt otherwise it would burn. Too little or too much and it will burn. I'd advise against the salt packet because it may not be the right amount.

I have the same Neti pot pictured and I use 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt in lukewarm water.

Make sure you're breathing in and out through your mouth... keeping your mind off what's actually going on in your nose will help relax and open up your sinuses for the water to go through. You've motivated me to get my turkey baster back out!

Also, make sure that the water is the right temperature. If it's too hot, or too cold, you'll notice because it HURTS!

If your nose was burning like when you go swimming and you get pool water up your nose, then I suspect that you didn't have the right salt balance in the water. I use 8oz of water, 1/4 tsp of kosher salt, and 1/8 tsp of baking soda (not baking powder!) and rinse half per nostril.

Lean over your sink and tilt your head nearly completely to one side.. if it slides down your throat you're either not bent forward enough or to the side. 1/2 the liquid through and then blow really well before starting on the other side. Hope this helps!

Make sure and use a little baking soda in the mixture. Maybe 1/8 t. If I just use salt my nose burns.. Good luck!
