Glaciers Will Disappear by Mid-Century
Just to totally scare you, new data shows that most of the glaciers in the world will be gone in the next 40 years. That's even if we can slow global warming to just moderate instead of "the ten hottest years ever recorded" which have occurred in the past eleven years. So, basically within our lifetimes, no more glaciers.
That means higher sea-levels (look out Malibu!) and reduced glacial melt flowing into rivers. In Asia, 40% of the world's population depends on water from rivers that come from glacial sources, so that's going to be a big problem for them.
And of course, there's all of the glacial wildlife that will be left without a home, and consequently go extinct. Guess that Global Warming Rug is just being realistic. Good grief!
There is a tiny speck of good news -- in 2007 melt rates were "substantially" lower than for 2006. Still, we have a long way to go before the smaller glaciers in the Pyrenees, Africa, the Andes and the Rocky mountains are safe, in fact it might be too late to save them. And even the biggest glaciers in the Himalayas and Alaska are in serious danger.
You can think of this news as a little (more) motivation to turn off the lights when you leave the house, and to carpool to work.
