Ranking the New 7 Wonders of Nature
Some of you may have believed this question settled back in the time of Heroditus, but apparently the seven natural wonders of the world is still open to debate. And this time you get to vote! The campaign to identify the new seven natural wonders is being run by the New7Wonders Foundation. This is the non-profit that ran the wildly successful international campaign to name the new seven wonders of the world in 2007. Over a 100 million people voted, and the "winners" were announced at a ceremony in Lisbon that was worthy of an Olympic opening. J. Lo, Neil Armstrong and Sir Ben Kingsley were all on hand for the big event.
Like any successful blockbuster, they're making a sequel. The New 7 Wonders of Nature campaign is now in the second phase, having narrowed down the nominees to 261.
Between now and July 7, 2009, you can register on the site, and vote for your top seven. In July, the top 77 will be judged by a panel of experts (this sounds like American Idol for waterfalls and mountain ranges, doesn't it?) who will pick the top 21. The general public will then have all of 2010 to vote, and the final announcement will be declared in 2011.
Some of the contenders include the usual suspects, like the Amazon and Mount Everest. However, there are also locations, like Chicamocha Canyon in Columbia, which is breathtaking and definitely not a household name. Yet. Knowledge always aids conservation, and most of these locations can use the help.
