It comes as no big surprise that the upcoming inauguration celebrations for President-elect Barack Obama will be the
greenest ever. What steps ate being taken to green this national event?
- The EPA will be advising party planners on how to make things go green.
- Two of the inaugural balls will be carbon neutral.
- Official events will feature organic food.
- There will be valet parking for those on bicycles.
- Public restrooms will nix the paper towels in favor of air-dryers.
- Some catered events will use biodegradable plates and utensils.
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad this is all happening. It just seems like a natural progression of the times instead of big news to remind us all how green Obama will be. I'm guessing there have been other green inaugurations. How much of a carbon footprint could George Washington have had, really?

That all sounds good except maybe the bathroom with no paper towels. I rarely ever use paper towels to dry my hands, but bathrooms with a handle I have to pull to get out should have paper towels. I end up having to use TP. Of course bathrooms with no door such as at airports or the rare bathroom door that opens outward (I don't understand why so few do) are bathrooms which I need no paper towels.

But let`s not overlook the motorcade, which for some reason will include 10 Saturn VUE`s and 12 Harley Davidson motorcycles. Wasteful much? And, Green my ass.
I bet Harley will reap many rewards from this advertisement opportunity. What a capital business-venture of commercializing American politics.
In the no too distant future:
"This presidential address was brought to you by the wonderful folks at Wal-Mart!"

I'm sure there will be aspects of the Inauguration that will not be green, but it is also up to us to make the right, sustainable choices. For example, when heading out to Washington DC we should plan ahead for a successful, "green" trip. One way to do this is to choose local foods when on the road. I am an intern for the Eat Well Guide, which has an online database of sustainable food vendors. We have created "Inaugural Travel Guides" that can help people find fresh and local restaurants, cafes and stores on their way to the Inauguration. Although the president has a major influence over how green our lives will be, in the end it is only up to us. Eat local! Check out www.eatwellguide.org
