Emma Thompson & Greenpeace Fight Airport Expansion
When London's Heathrow Airport announced that it was interested in building a third runway to accommodate increased air travel, Greenpeace sprung into action. With the help of Emma Thompson, politician Zac Goldsmith and comedian Alistair McGowan, the environmental group has bought a one acre parcel of land smack-dab in the middle of the proposed site.Opponents of the expansion worry that the increase from 480,000 to 720,000 flights per year will create an unacceptable level of noise and pollution. Activists claim that for a government committed to curbing climate change, the expansion is hypocritical.
While I agree that increased air travel is no good for the environment, I'm not sure that this one acre lot will actually stop the government from doing what it wants to do. Perhaps the lack of runway space will only fuel sales for flying cars.
