January's Green Challenge: Paper Towel Wars
Join the Green Challenge every month and make one small change to help the environment. Keep us posted on your progress throughout the month and keep an eye out for spectacular giveaways. In the interest of full disclosure. I have lost this month's challenge already. My husband threw a small fit when I explained to him that we would be going paper towel-less. He could not forfeit his requisite two paper towels per meal. So, I drove over to Whole Foods and paid a premium for recycled paper and sheepishly returned home.
That said, though this month's challenge was to have a paper towel free "household," I will continue with the ban. I have yet to touch a paper towel (other than picking up my husband's) and the kids never got them to begin with.
I have made some changes in regards to general household use. I have asked my husband to conserve, he says he will and I have seen fewer towels scattered around but only time will tell. I've also started placing lightly soiled towels into my compost pile. I can't believe that I didn't do this sooner as I'm always looking for more "brown" materials.
How are you doing this month? Hopefully better than I have. Who knew paper towels were such a touchy issue?

I don't use paper towels, and haven't for about 5 months. At first my kids (5) freaked out, but now they think it is perfectly natural. To keep us all from grabbing any towel and wiping off on it we have specific towels that we use instead of the paper. So far, we have reduced our paper consumption to almost nothing, by removing paper towels from our lives.
