Bush Announces Eco-Protection for Chunks of Pacific Ocean
Rarely touted as the greenest President around, Bush has announced that 200, 000 square miles of the Pacific ocean will be protected. Rare whales and delicate coral reefs in the area are breathing a sigh of relief as they should not be disturbed by off-shore drilling and other eco-destroying activities.According to spokeswoman Dana Perino, the newly protected spots will be the largest area of protected ocean in the world. The newly protected zones will include the Mariana Trench, a bunch of reefs and atolls near American Samoa and, overall, encompass an area about the size of France.
While some groups have praised this decision (the Pew Environment Group seems happy with the announcement), a lot of environmentalists are still upset over Bush's earlier lifting of offshore drilling bans in order to help bring fuel prices down.
