Is Your Organic Diet Causing You Distress?
In a satirical piece from The Enduring Vision, Martin Palmer of Cincinnati, Ohio suffers from shame over his organic diet. His friends and relatives belabor his strange eating habits and shrinking waistline. They implore him to eat more fast food.Though this piece is comical, are you receiving any flack for your diet? I was recently berated by my husband for choosing fresh milk from as small local dairy for the kids over stuff trucked in from out of state. I also got weird looks when switching from plastic to stainless steel water bottles until BPA was addressed on the Today Show.
Who thinks you're crazy?

My boss and coworkers are constantly making a scene about my vegetarianism. They cop out of choosing a place to eat for lunch, for example, by blaming me for my "special needs". (I've told them a gazillion times that I can usually find something anywhere.)
Once we *do* go somewhere, one of them (usually my boss) makes an announcement to the server that "She's a VEGETARIAN!" like I can't either find something on the menu or quietly discuss w/the server if there is an alternate dish the kitchen can prepare for me.
I'm consistently surprised that still, in 2009, people are so close-minded about others' lifestyle choices, *particularly* when those choice don't hurt (and in fact, help) others. (And no, I don't lecture to them about their eating animals.)

It sounds like lunch is no fun for you at the office. I wonder why they make such a point of "calling you out" in front of everyone. All I can think is that vegetarianism makes people uncomfortable because whether you mean to or not, you can make people defensive about their own choices. Good luck.

My stepsister-in-law (ah, divorced families!) gave me a stern talking-to this holiday season. She was concerned that by feeding my infant organic foods that, when she grew up, my baby would be horribly ill all the time because "her system wouldn't be used to chemicals."
I couldn't believe she was telling me (unprompted, even) to give my baby pesticides ON PURPOSE, to get her accustomed to them. Um, WHAT? Seriously?

I get most of my flak for being vegan from baby boomers. Bless them, but they just are unable to comprehend that you DON`T need to eat meat to be healthy. They seem to be brainwashed by the meat and dairy industries.
