CPSIA May Eliminate Buying Used Kids Clothes

kids clothesIf you buy handmade things at all, you have probably heard about the February 10 deadline for the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act which will require anything sold for children 12 and under be tested for lead and phthalates. Everyone has been worried about handmade toys and items for children but what about used clothing and toys for children?

Over at The Simple Dollar there is a great post about the impact the CPSIA could have on thrift and resale shops. In all the talk about handmade toys and cottage industries I never even thought about thrift shops. A shirt sold for 50 cents obviously is not going to be tested.

So do all those clothes go into the landfill? Get donated to charities? Do the shops give them away for free? And stores dedicated to selling only baby and children's clothing and items - what will happen to those? If you rely on thrift and resale shops for even a portion of your child's clothing, you need to start stocking up for the next year and developing hand-me-down relationships with other parents that eliminate the shops. It could take awhile for this to sort itself out.
