Facebook Holding Firm On Banning Breastfeeding Pictures

breastfeeding Facebook is holding firm on its policy regarding inappropriate photos, which has led to the removal of photos of nursing mothers. The hullabaloo began when some women noticed that photographs of themselves nursing their children were flagged for removal. Facebook has a policy that prohibits members from uploading any content deemed to be "obscene, pornographic or sexually explicit."

Stephanie Knapp Muir, one of the organizers of a Facebook group protesting the policy, says that the policy unfairly discriminates against women, as men are allowed to show bare chests on Facebook. Barry Schnitt, a spokesperson for Facebook, says that Facebook believes it has a consistent policy regarding photos and that they have no plans to change it.

The Facebook protest group can be found here, along with over 3,500 pictures of, you guessed it, mothers breastfeeding.

It seems to me, that in the U.S., it is more natural to see someone get shot and bleed to death than to see someone breastfeeding.

Mothers in many parts of the world breast feed their babies for far longer than here. How is that more environmentally sound than relying on formulas? Does that really have to be explained?

When things like breastfeeding pictures become taboo, the act itself becomes shameful to mothers everywhere, thus reducing the time they breastfeed their children and moving to more environmentally impactful options like baby formulas.
