California Sues Bush Over Endangered Species Act

bald eagleDuring his last days in the White House, President Bush has been slashing protection for endangered species. The state of California says, "enough already" and has brought a suit against the president.

Previously if a company sought a permit to mine or log in the United States, they had to go through the Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service to assess any impact the activity could have on endangered species. With Bush's last minute changes, federal agencies now get to make the decisions without the sound advice of scientists.

Attorney General Jerry Brown filed suit last Monday hoping to delay the new rules from going into effect until President-elect Obama has a chance to review them. Obama has already said that he will work to reverse the rule changes though it can take up to a year to do so.

California is not the first to sue the president over these new rules thought they are certainly a big player.
