December's Green Challenge: Unwrapped
This month's challenge was to reduce the amount of packaging that comes into my home. This meant eliminating any single serve products that I regularly buy. Though I buy very few, these types of purchases are wrapped in waste and it was a pleasure to rethink my shopping list.
I have eradicated single servings of applesauce, opting instead for the jars. Switching to bagged popcorn to pop on the stove rather than the microwave* will save a few trees and drums of oil over the next decade. I've also continued to limit the number of produce bags that I use at the store though I am a fan of baby carrots so I continue to buy those bagged, though not in single servings.
I feel like most of my wast comes in the form of milk jugs. We go through about five gallons a week and I am not sure how I can reduce the plastic in my recycling bin short of getting a goat or cow for the backyard.
The biggest effort that I've made to reduce packaging this month is to start an organic garden. This is the ultimate in waste reduction as I've used my own compost from a previous Green Challenge. I will undoubtedly be issuing a garden challenge once the rest of the country warms up a bit.
How did you do this month? Any tips that you would like to share?
*One reader pointed out that there are microwave poppers out there that don't require oil. I found this one on Amazon.
