First US Offshore Wind Farm A Little Closer to Reality
After years of preppy protest, the first offshore wind farm, off the coast of Massachusetts, is finally moving forward. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection approved the undersea cables necessary to transmit the power generated by a wind farm off the coast of Cape Cod.
Owners of the coveted beach front Cape Cod property have been opposed to the project, claiming that it would ruin their views. Basically the state review found that the 130 turbines, which would provide power for 400,000 homes, determined that the project would provide more benefit than harm.
Of course, there are still more hurdles before the project gets a full green light. Still pending are approvals from state, local and federal organizations including the Coast Guard, Department of the Interior and the Federal Aviation Administration.
Even though there are several more steps, this approval is an important milestone in our progress toward a viable alternative fuel source in the US.
