Baby Gorilla Born in Israel
This is the third birth for Leah, the mother gorilla. It's still too early for keepers to tell if the new arrival is male or female, although they suspect it will turn out to be a sister to join her two older brothers.
Even though gorilla births in captivity are rare, this seems to be the season for it. Earlier this month the San Francisco Zoo announced the birth of a male gorilla. Sadly, his mother Monifa rejected him, but plans for him to be cared for by his "auntie" Bawang are going well.
So far Leah seems to be doing well caring for her newborn, and the keepers are excited to be able to use attention from this new birth to bring attention to the plight of gorillas in the wild. Because of encroachment on their natural habitat, gorillas are critically endangered. Every birth, even ones in captivity like this one in Israel, is great news.
