This or That: Urban or Rural living?

This is the time of year when the majority of people (myself included) travel from the larger towns or cities where they currently live back to the smaller hometown where they grew up. It seemed appropriate then to ask, which is better for the environment -- living in the city or living in the country?
Of course living in the country is the greener option overall and most of the advantages are pretty obvious (less pollution, room to plant gardens and own farm animals for food, etc) but you might be surprised at some of the green benefits that come from living in a heavily populated area:
- Easier access to public transportation
- Walkable neighborhoods
- You might not need a car
- Co-housing and apartment buildings are more energy efficient than most free-standing homes.
- City living is usually more energy efficient per person than country living

Yes, it is interesting. Seems like every several years there is a wave to either get into a city or out of the city. We moved into the country a year and half ago and I could have never imagined how much I'd enjoy it. Of course having internet, being able to work from home and still able to stay in communication, made the biggest difference. We compost almost everything, reuse things a lot and experiment with growing all kinds of vegetables, herbs and fruits. With prices of organic food where they are - we save a bundle and our health has improved as well. Strongly recommend it.
