Biking the World Over

I must admit, I needed to write some good news today. I found plenty of bad news to tell you about, more than I am willing to share. The Bush Administration changed rules on hazardous waste, on air pollution, on endangered species, all of which environmental groups decry. But right now, it's the holiday season and I need some cheer.

Ladies and gentlemen, let's remember how many bike paths there are in Colombia. Commissioner of Parks, Sports and Recreation for the city of Bogotá, Guillermo Penalosa says people on rickety bikes deserve as good a path as a BMW driver. To wit, residents of Bogota frequently get around on bikes. Yes, even in war torn countries biking is voluntarily selected. Here's a video of Penalosa talking at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. Thanks to Salon for writing about this.
