Baby Gorilla Born at the San Francisco Zoo
This week Monifa, an endangered western lowland gorilla, gave birth to a healthy male baby. But after just a few hours she lost interest in him, and zookeepers had remove him for safety.
Keepers have a plan to reintroduce the baby, and hope that Monifa will accept him. If that fails, they will either try to raise him by hand, or find a surrogate gorilla mother.
Gorillas in the Congo are currently caught in the middle of the civil war there, They are seriously endangered in the wild, and some day soon the only ones may be living in captivity.
Let's hope this new little guy catches break and finds some maternal loving somewhere. Check out more adorable baby photos on the San Francisco Zoo site.
