This month I have challenged myself to reduce the amount of packaging waste that I generate by rethinking what purchases I make. I'll be reporting on some of my findings next week. But for how, here are a few tips on avoiding excess packaging.
This month I have challenged myself to reduce the amount of packaging waste that I generate by rethinking what purchases I make. I'll be reporting on some of my findings next week. But for how, here are a few tips on avoiding excess packaging.- Buy whole fruits and vegetables instead of packaged, pre-sliced pieces. It kills me to see single-serve sliced apples in plastic baggies at Whole Foods of all places.
- Buy in bulk. Those bulk bins at your local food coop or even those massive jars of pickles at Costco save on packaging (and even save you money).
- Skip the takeout. Though it may be less stress to order out dinner for the night, it certainly is not easy on the environment. Take out containers make up a great deal of packaging waste. Find a restaurant who will let you bring your own reusable containers or plan ahead by freezing meals for nights that you don't feel like cooking.
- Buy a lunchbox and use it. If you are used to bringing a frozen lunch everyday tucked away in a microwavable, plastic dish and encased in a box, you are not helping matters. Pick out a cute lunchbox or sack from somewhere like Reusable Bags and fill it with fresh goodies daily.
