This or That: Reusable lighter or disposable matches?

Whether it's for lighting holiday candles or smoking cigarettes, this time of year most of us have at least one reason to be using lighters or matches -- so which is the best for the environment? Lighters might be good for several uses (some, like Zippos, are used indefinitely) but they result in toxic chemicals and waste in their production and use petroleum to fuel the flame. Matches are only for a single use (unless you buy these nifty two-sided ones) but even the wooden ones can be sustainable and sometimes (the paper ones especially) are even made of recycled materials.
