Target to Build Green Store
East Liberty, Pennsylvania will be the site of Target's new 152,000 square foot, green store. Instead of building a wide store over 10 to 15 acres as it does in the suburbs, Target will be building up 42 feet with a ground floor parking garage. Sure there's a building demolition that has to happen first, but that apparently doesn't count against them.
The building should be complete within a year and half at which time the company will be seeking LEED Certification.

Even though a building demolition must happen in order to accomplish this new store, LEED offers points towards certification for reuse of the building materials that have been torn down. Even if Target does not choose to reuse the materials from the existing building, it is still much more sustainable to develop a 'brownfield' site, rather than develop on virgin land. Thank God one big box is taking a stride to get away from being a big box. Now if they could start working on supplying better information on where their products are being made and in what conditions!!

Let's hope they reuse some of the materials. I do appreciate that they are building on an existing site -- though in the article, the neighbors aren't too thrilled about it.
