Missouri Gas Stations Ditch Ethanol to Lower Gas Prices

Gas stations in Missouri have stopped blending ethanolRemember how last year ethanol was all the rage, because it reduced vehicle emissions, helped slash gas prices, and reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Then the news got out that corn-based biofuels brought with them tons of nasty side effects like food shortages and ocean dead zones... Well now that gas prices are back down, there's a new and inconvenient truth that's upsetting the applecart for ethanol producers -- ethanol is actually more expensive than regular gas.

For the last couple of weeks, retailers across Missouri have stopped blending ethanol in with their regular. That's on account of a state law that allows sellers don't have to sell low emissions blends "If the price for ethanol is more expensive than the price for gasoline." And even though corn-based ethanol isn't exactly the panacea it was once cracked up to be, it still represents the largest movement in the renewable fuels marketplace. If oil prices stay at rock bottom for too long, it could turn a green energy success story into a cautionary tale.
