December's Green Challenge: Packaging Excess
You may (or may not) have noticed that there was no November Green Challenge. This was because November kicked my butt. However, I am back and ready for this month's challenge. Cutting down on packaging is something that I have been thinking about for a while. It's not especially seasonal but maybe by cutting out single-serve containers, I'll feel better about the amount of wrapping paper I'm going to tear through later this month.I typically buy a small number of single serve products. Though I pack lunches in a Laptop Lunch Kit, I do have some single applesauce containers for snacks and I frequently keep little boxes of raisins in the car for cranky kids. I started to look at all of the trash that was coming from these purchases -- especially those consumed in the house where I had access to dishes and a sink. I decided that this was one area that I could definitely use some work.
For this month I will be reducing waste by altering my shopping habits. Off the top of my head, there are three products that I buy often that can be easily altered. As usual, I will be reporting on my success throughout the month.
Packaging links:
- Grassroots Recycling Network lists Lunchables as the biggest offender in regards to excessive packaging.
- Excess packaging has even inspired naked protests.

I too shall join. One of the things I've been meaning to do is purchase small tupperware or similar containers, that hold roughly one of those boxes worth of sultanas to pack my own from a 2kg bag of sultanas for in the car. This obviously is not limited to just sultanas. Buy in bulk and pack small for travel.

I , too, buy the odd single-serving packages to keep cranky kids happy.....I don't do it often, but I think I need to cut it out all together.
Great way to refocus green deeds.....
